The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Bruno Hogan and Steve Erwin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gomes avoids a punch combination nicely.
Gomes missing with a left hand there. Benoit was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
A jab from Benoit misses.
Benoit tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Gomes was well out of range. Poor timing from Benoit.
No luck for Gomes with that takedown attempt.
A combination from Gomes does no damage.
Benoit avoids the body shot from Gomes.
Benoit lands a nice hook to Gomes's body. Gomes takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Gomes shoots in for a takedown but Benoit shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Benoit sizes up Gomes with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Nice combo by Benoit! Oh, that's hurt him - Gomes falls to the canvas and Benoit follows him into side control.
Gomes is rocked!
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Gomes looks gassed!

The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Benoit stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Gomes is still on wobbly legs! Can Benoit finish him?
Benoit lands a big right hook! Gomes looks hurt but is still standing! Benoit lands a left jab and another right hook! This time Gomes falls down and Benoit dives in with a huge hammer fist! Gomes's eyes roll back! The referee calls for the bell and Benoit runs up the cage to celebrate with his fans!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:09 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Michael Benoit!
