PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Pai Mei (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Luiz Gonzaga (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Luiz Gonzaga was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Pai Mei!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Luiz Gonzaga!
The judges for this bout are Yuuki Gou, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Excellent takedown into side control there by Mei.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Mei is looking to take a break and control but Gonzaga is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mei controlling the position.
Gonzaga takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Mei seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Gonzaga for as long as he can get away with.
Gonzaga regains half guard.
Gonzaga is not content to let Mei control the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Pai Mei wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Mei feints and as Gonzaga raises his hands in defense, Mei changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Mei has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Mei got a little sloppy there for a moment and Gonzaga has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Mei has managed to get both his arms back between Gonzaga's legs - danger averted.
Gonzaga avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Mei trying to control the position from guard on top but Gonzaga is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Mei gets to his feet - Gonzaga follows without any prompting.

Mei feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Mei advances to half guard.
Mei wants to pass to mount but Gonzaga is defending the position.

Gonzaga is looking for a sweep. Mei is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Gonzaga blocking the ground and pound attempt from Mei.

Well, if Mei is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Mei has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Mei avoids the attempt from Gonzaga to control.
Mei tries to control but Gonzaga wriggling away.
Mei controlling the pace for now.
Mei trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Mei working for a guillotine from mount but Gonzaga is in no mood to give up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mei scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Gonzaga is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Gonzaga might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Mei kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Gonzaga is in all sorts of trouble here.

Mei looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Mei trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Gonzaga tries to reverse the position but Mei maintains control.
Gonzaga is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Gonzaga tries to hold on but Mei postures up.
Gonzaga takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Mei has control of Gonzaga's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Gonzaga regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Mei can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Gonzaga is looking to escape.

Mei get's back to his feet.

Mei shoots in and bounces Gonzaga off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Gonzaga looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Mei gets to his feet. Gonzaga looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Mei closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Gonzaga to the mat! Gonzaga manages to get full guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Mei is looking to stand up but Gonzaga won't let him.
Mei is breathing heavily.

Mei avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Mei wants to pass the guard but Gonzaga is keeping the position.

Gonzaga has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Mei can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Gonzaga is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Mei is aware though and is defending well.

Gonzaga controls Mei momentarily but Mei frees himself.

Mei stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Mei has managed to clinch.

Gonzaga is fighting off a takedown attempt but Mei is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Gonzaga to the mat. Gonzaga regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Gonzaga is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Gonzaga keeping moving, preventing Mei from controlling successfully.
Mei wants to pass the guard but Gonzaga is keeping the position.
Mei advances to half guard.
Mei seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Gonzaga is looking for a sweep. Mei is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Mei is taking a breather. Gonzaga says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

That's nine minutes gone in the round.
Gonzaga is looking to control Mei's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Gonzaga avoid being mounted?

Mei looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Mei is working for a kimura but Gonzaga is defending it quite comfortably.

Mei is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Pai Mei dominated that round.
That's time! Mei's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Gonzaga has his takedown stuffed

and Mei counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Gonzaga's guard now.
Mei stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gonzaga swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Gonzaga escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mei gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Gonzaga looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Mei throwing strikes from guard but Gonzaga blocks nicely.
Gonzaga working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Mei.

Mei passes into half guard.
Mei wants to pass the guard but Gonzaga is defending well.
Gonzaga is refusing to be controlled, as Mei sits in half guard.
Mei is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Mei decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
Gonzaga has his takedown stuffed

and Mei counters by clinching up.

Mei tightens his grip and picks Gonzaga up, before dumping him to the ground. Gonzaga manages to land in guard.

Gonzaga is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Mei defends well.
Pai Mei overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Gonzaga is breathing heavily.

Mei makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Mei passes Gonzaga's left leg - he's now in half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Mei is trying to control the action in half guard but Gonzaga is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Gonzaga looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Mei perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Mei trying to pass the guard but Gonzaga defending well.

Mei has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Mei is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Gonzaga can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Mei is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Gonzaga to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Gonzaga shrugs it off.

Gonzaga is squirming around, avoiding Mei's attempts to control the action.

Gonzaga is desperately trying to improve his position but Mei has a good base and remains in mount.
Gonzaga regains half guard.
Gonzaga gets full guard.
Mei has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Gonzaga is proving hard to escape from.

Gonzaga has his feet on Mei's thighs here. He's pushed Mei off and worked for a very quick armbar from the bottom! He's flipped onto his stomach and he's cranking hard on the arm! Mei screams in pain and taps out! This one is all over!
