PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Zach Parise (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Arturo Cano (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cano has chosen Disembodied as his entrance music. This should be fireworks!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Zach Parise!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 6 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Arturo Cano!
The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Tarja Halkonen and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cano fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Parise avoids it really well and circles away.
Parise checks a leg kick nicely.
Parise misses with a head kick.
Parise throws a body punch but Cano moves out of range.
Parise is looking to clinch but Cano is avoiding it.
Cano feints and then cracks Parise's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Parise down.
Cano throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Cano tries a low kick but Parise avoids it.
Some bone on bone action there as Parise checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
The fight stays on the outside here - Parise looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Parise throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Cano sees it coming and avoids it easily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cano throws a leg kick that misses.
Cano fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Parise has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Parise fails with an attempt to clinch.
Parise misses with a two punch combination.

Cano gets a takedown into half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Parise has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Cano is working away from the top position though.

Cano throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Parise gets back to full guard.
Cano trying to control but Parise is working from the bottom.

Cano wants to control from the top but Parise keeps moving.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Cano with a nice head shot there.
Cano stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Parise swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Parise is looking for a triangle but Cano pushes his legs off easily.

Parise is trying to keep Cano in close.
Cano trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Cano passes Parise's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Cano seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Parise does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Cano is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Cano is looking to advance position but Parise won't allow it.

Cano is trying to control. Parise wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Arturo Cano dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



A momentary lapse in concentration from Parise enables Cano to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Parise manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Cano tries to free his leg and advance position but Parise is retaining full guard.
Parise lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Cano!

Parise throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Cano because Parise loaded up on that one.

Cano has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Parise with shots to the head and body - Cano looks very uncomfortable down there.

Arturo Cano has got the better of the ground game so far.
Cano is not content to let Parise control the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Parise is nestled in close to Cano, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Parise tries to pass to full mount but Cano defends it.
Parise trying to control the action but Cano is working from the bottom.

Cano avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Parise.
Cano is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Cano is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Parise's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Parise's back!
Cano controlling well, preventing Parise from escaping the position.
Cano is looking to control Parise but Parise is wriggling around and keeping busy.

Cano is breathing heavily.
Parise trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.
Parise manages to reverse the position and now he's in Cano's guard. Nice work there by Parise.

Parise won't allow Cano to sweep him here.
Parise wants to control from the top but Cano keeps moving.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Zach Parise.
Cano tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Parise was well out of range. Poor timing from Cano.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Parise throws a right and a left that Cano avoids nicely.
Parise stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Cano.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Parise wants to clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Zach Parise will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Cano shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Parise sprawls well. Parise wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Cano gets slowly back to his feet.
Cano dodges the punch combination from Parise.
Parise uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Cano.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Parise lands a head shot.
Parise cracks Cano with a good jab.
Cano tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Parise was well out of range. Poor timing from Cano.

Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Parise.
Cano avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Cano connects with a leg kick. Parise looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
Parise throws a right and a left that Cano avoids nicely.
Cano swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Cano dodges the punch combination from Parise.
Sloppy strikes from Parise. Those never looked like landing.
Cano takes one to the chin there.
Parise misses the shot to the body.

Cano lands with a thumping leg kick.
No luck for Cano with that takedown attempt.
Cano throws a nice inside leg kick.
Parise fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Cano looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Cano punishes Parise's body with a nice straight punch.
Parise looks to throw the jab but Cano is out of range.
Parise waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Cano.
Parise misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Cano throws a solid leg kick but Parise takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Cano.

Cano throws a wild body kick that Parise sees coming a mile off.
Cano fails with a takedown attempt.
Zach Parise has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Arturo Cano.
Cano takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Parise lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Parise stuffs the takedown attempt from Cano. Cano gets slowly back to his feet.
Parise lands a lovely overhand right.
Cano misses with a body kick.
Parise throws a right and a left that both miss.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Parise changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Parise is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Cano.
Parise throws a big shot that misses.
Parise doesn't manage to clinch there - Cano circles away.
Cano throws a leg kick but Parise moved away.
Cano looks to score with a jab to the body but Parise is just out of range.
Parise scores with the left hand. Cano knows he should have avoided that one.

Parise moves into the clinch.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Cano blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Cano prevents a body shot from Parise.

And that's the end of the fight!
Zach Parise showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Parise has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
