Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, Denis Opal! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Luca Sparazzo! The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, James Ackerman and James Atkins.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sparazzo tries to close the distance and clinch up but Opal swats him away and circles back towards the center. Opal moves into the clinch. Sparazzo can't break the clinch.
Sparazzo looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now. Opal manages to break the clinch.
Opal gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Sparazzo tightens his grip and picks Opal up, before dumping him to the ground. Opal manages to land in guard. Opal looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Sparazzo throws a big right hand that misses. Sparazzo wants to control from the top but Opal keeps moving. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sparazzo trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Opal wants to sweep but no luck. Sparazzo trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Opal has his hands on Sparazzo's head, controlling the position. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Opal not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
That's one minute gone in the round. Opal is really struggling to control Sparazzo but he's trying to hold on to the position.
We're going to have a standup here because Denis Opal wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Sparazzo is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Opal's half guard. Opal wants to improve his position but Sparazzo is controlling well.
Nice strikes from Sparazzo there. Opal is not content to let Sparazzo control the position. Sparazzo not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Opal regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Sparazzo. Opal is pulling down on Sparazzo's head to control his posture.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sparazzo tries to free his leg and advance position but Opal is retaining full guard. Opal keeping moving, preventing Sparazzo from controlling successfully. Opal looking for a sweep. Not yet Opal, not yet. Opal working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sparazzo doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sparazzo manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Sparazzo controls the pace of the fight for a moment. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Sparazzo throws and elbow that misses. Opal uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Sparazzo's guard. Nice move by Opal! Sparazzo wants to stand up but Opal is controlling him. Sparazzo keeping moving, preventing Opal from controlling successfully.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sparazzo wants to get back to his feet but Opal is in a dominant position and won't allow it. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Opal slips nicely into half guard. Sparazzo makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Sparazzo. Opal stops Sparazzo from standing up. Sparazzo uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Opal shoots in for a takedown but Sparazzo shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sparazzo misses with a combination
and Opal counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Sparazzo's guard now. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Opal stands up from Sparazzo's guard - Opal perhaps looking for a knockout. Sparazzo ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Opal moves away. Opal shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Sparazzo's guard. Sparazzo is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Sparazzo looks gassed! Opal tries to free his leg and advance position but Sparazzo is retaining full guard. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Opal won't allow Sparazzo to get back to his feet. Sparazzo keeping moving, preventing Opal from controlling successfully. Opal trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Denis Opal will probably get the nod. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Sparazzo throws a series of punches but Opal moves out of range. Sparazzo blocks a head kick by Opal.
Opal takes one to the side of the head.
Opal lands a leg kick that knocks Sparazzo off balance momentarily. Opal wants to clinch. Sparazzo throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Sparazzo misses with a looping right. A slow jab from Sparazzo misses its intended target. Sparazzo is looking to chop away at Opal's legs. Sparazzo throws a jab but it's blocked by Opal. Opal throws a head kick that misses. Sparazzo throws a lazy head kick and Opal counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. Denis Opal overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. This has been an exciting period of action! Opal engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Sparazzo is breathing heavily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Opal thows a big elbow that misses. Sparazzo wants to get back to his feet but Opal is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Opal gets to his feet. Sparazzo looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Opal goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo. Opal keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Sparazzo. Opal drives through with a takedown into Sparazzo's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. Opal trying to control but Sparazzo is working from the bottom. Opal might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Opal throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sparazzo wants to get back to his feet but Opal is in a dominant position and won't allow it. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Opal throwing strikes but missing. Opal controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Sparazzo wants to sweep here but Opal controlling him for the moment. Opal stops Sparazzo from standing up. Sparazzo being controlled here, momentarily.
The ref stands the fighters back up because Denis Opal just wasn't active enough. Sparazzo tries to sprawl but Opal drives through with a takedown into half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Opal stalling. Opal prevents Sparazzo from improving his position. Sparazzo is refusing to be controlled, as Opal sits in half guard. Sparazzo looks like he's trying to stand up.
Denis Opal has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet. Opal keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Sparazzo.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Opal rushes Sparazzo and presses him up against the cage. Sparazzo tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Opal smiles and moves away.
Opal shoots in but no luck this time. Sparazzo scores with a nice right hand.
Sparazzo tries to close the distance and clinch up but Opal swats him away and circles back towards the center. Sparazzo throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Opal lands a high kick!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Sparazzo misses with a wild combination.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Opal shoots for a takedown but Sparazzo saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Sparazzo rushes Opal and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Denis Opal dominated that second round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Sparazzo throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Opal sees it coming and avoids it easily. Sparazzo on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those. Luca Sparazzo seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Sparazzo leaves Opal with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Sparazzo throws a jab but it's blocked by Opal. Sparazzo wants to clinch. Sparazzo cracks Opal with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business. Sparazzo throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Opal. Opal throws a series of punches but Sparazzo avoids them all with ease. Sparazzo cracks Opal with a good jab. Sparazzo takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Opal looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Opal thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Sparazzo's head.
That's one minute gone in the round. Opal is figuring out what he wants to do next. Sparazzo is trying to escape back to his feet but Opal uses the scramble to pass into side control.
Sparazzo parries the strikes from Opal easily there. Opal is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Sparazzo to escape.
Sparazzo tries to get back to half guard but can't. Opal working the ground and pound from side control. Opal wants to control but Sparazzo is keeping him busy.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sparazzo is looking to reverse the position. Sparazzo wants to get back to his feet but Opal is dominant here and he's now got Sparazzo's back! Opal throwing damaging strikes from the back! Sparazzo could be in trouble here!
Sparazzo trying to get back to his feet but Opal is in full control for now. Opal scores with punches and elbows. Opal has the hooks in. Sparazzo is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted. Opal looking for the rear naked choke. And he's got it! Sparazzo taps!
