Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Shogun Rua! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Boowa Kwala! The judges for this bout are William Peck, Gregory Folan and Yves DeLean.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kwala fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Kwala shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Rua misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Rua is looking to clinch. Kwala takes the fight into the clinch. Rua fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Kwala jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Rua walks away with a smile on his face. Kwala gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Shogun Rua has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Boowa Kwala. Horrible takedown by Kwala or perhaps it was just good defense by Rua which made him look bad. Rua tries to close the distance and clinch but Kwala swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Kwala fails with the takedown and Rua counters with a one-two to the body. Rua clinches up against the cage.
That's one minute gone in the round. The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows. Kwala tries to break the clinch but Rua is controlling the position. Rua tries to circle away but Kwala has him pinned against the cage. Kwala jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Rua walks away with a smile on his face. Kwala gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Rua really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Kwala throws a sloppy head kick and Rua counters with a thumping low kick. Rua slaps away a takedown attempt from Kwala, before circling back to the center of the mat. Rua tries for a takedown but Kwala sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Rua wants to clinch and Kwala moves into the clinch. Kwala throws an elbow that misses.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kwala is trying to break the clinch but Rua is controlling him. Rua blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning. Rua manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back. Rua controls Kwala momentarily but Kwala frees himself. Rua is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a tringle but Kwala frees his head nicely. Oh but Rua has switched to an armbar! Kwala is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:39 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Armbar). Shogun Rua! Shogun Rua is the new light heavyweight champion!
