PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Argo Surtr (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jason McNeil (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Argo Surtr!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jason McNeil!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, David Schapiro and Dean Styles.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

McNeil gets a double leg takedown into Surtr's guard.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Surtr trying to control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
McNeil is fighting to break Surtr's control of his arms but Surtr is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
McNeil not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Surtr working a defensive guard here.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Argo Surtr just wasn't active enough.
Surtr fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but McNeil is out of range.
Surtr shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.

McNeil closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Surtr quickly recovers to half guard.

McNeil is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Surtr defends it well.
McNeil prevents Surtr from improving his position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
McNeil is pressing down on Surtr's thigh, looking to free his foot. Surtr is holding on for now.
Surtr moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Surtr keeping full guard, as McNeil tries to pass.
McNeil trying to control the position from guard on top but Surtr is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Surtr wants to sweep but no luck.
McNeil looking to pass the guard.
Surtr has control of McNeil's left arm, preventing McNeil from doing any damage.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Surtr fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Surtr stuffs the takedown.
Surtr bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Surtr throws a sloppy head kick and McNeil moves out of range easily.
McNeil blocks the body kick.
Surtr connects with an inside leg kick.
McNeil dives in and grabs Surtr's left leg, looking for a takedown. Surtr pushes down on McNeil's head and hops out.

McNeil closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
McNeil throws a strike aimed at the side of Surtr's head but Surtr avoids it well.
McNeil wants to control but Surtr is keeping him busy.

McNeil is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Surtr is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Surtr tries to bench press McNeil off him but McNeil keeps the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
McNeil trying to control the position but Surtr is working away.
You can see the frustration on Surtr's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
McNeil cracks Surtr with an elbow. That is naaassty.
McNeil is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Surtr is trying to work for a sweep but McNeil has mounted him!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
McNeil raining down hammerfists from mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jason McNeil dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


McNeil shoots in but Surtr avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Surtr keeps McNeil at a distance using the push kick.
A clash of legs there as McNeil blocks the low kick.
Surtr tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
A head kick misses from Surtr.
Surtr connects with a leg kick. McNeil looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
McNeil checks the leg kick.
McNeil misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
McNeil closes this distance looking for a takedown but Surtr circles away.
Argo Surtr has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jason McNeil.
Surtr fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.

That's one minute gone in the round.
McNeil takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
Surtr fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and McNeil has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Surtr throws a sloppy head kick and McNeil moves out of range easily.
Surtr throws a looping overhand right but McNeil ducks down to avoid it.
McNeil has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Surtr.
Argo Surtr is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Surtr throws a head kick that misses.

McNeil throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Surtr tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. McNeil is in Surtr's guard.
McNeil works a leg free and moves into half guard.

McNeil wants to work for an arm triangle but Surtr is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
McNeil trying to control the action but Surtr is working from the bottom.
Jason McNeil has got the better of the ground game so far.

McNeil looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
McNeil passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Surtr!
Surtr is looking to improve his position but McNeil isn't that keen on the idea.
McNeil looking to control but Surtr is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
McNeil sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

McNeil misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Surtr wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by McNeil.
McNeil throws some wild stikes that Surtr manages to avoid easily.
Surtr is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
McNeil tries to control but Surtr wriggling away.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
McNeil takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Surtr is squirming around, avoiding McNeil's attempts to control the action.
McNeil misses with a head shot.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
McNeil trying to control but Surtr is having none of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Jason McNeil will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. And we move into the final round!

McNeil fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Surtr tries to score with a low kick but McNeil moves his leg out of the way.

Nice takedown defense from Surtr. No joy for McNeil on that attempt.
Argo Surtr has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jason McNeil.
McNeil avoids the head kick by Surtr.
Surtr lands with a kick to the temple. McNeil shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"

McNeil misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Surtr throws a nice inside leg kick.
Surtr fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Surtr takes a swing at McNeil's ribcage but misses.
Surtr scores with a kick to the body.
McNeil shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Surtr as he avoids it easily.
Argo Surtr is winning the standup battle so far.
McNeil has a takedown stuffed.
Surtr tries to land a leg kick but McNeil saw it coming and moves away.
McNeil takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Surtr scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
A nice leg kick lands there from Surtr.
McNeil takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Surtr throws a nice outside leg kick.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
McNeil on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
McNeil takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
A solid leg kick lands there for Surtr.
Crunch! Surtr slams his shin into McNeil's torso.
McNeil on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Donk. Surtr catches McNeil right on the button with a cross.
Surtr fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt McNeil.
McNeil has developed a nice purple lump on his ribcage, as a result of some heavy body kicks from Surtr.
Surtr scores with a spinning back kick!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Surtr fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Surtr tries to land a front kick but McNeil steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Surtr takes a swing at McNeil's ribcage but misses.
McNeil closes this distance looking for a takedown but Surtr circles away.
Surtr leaves McNeil with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
A shot to the liver by Surtr. Beautiful body shot.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Surtr, right into the meat.
Argo Surtr seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
McNeil tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Surtr scores with a nice body kick.
Surtr scores with a slapping inside leg kick.

Surtr throws a leg kick which misses McNeil's front leg but catches the back leg as McNeil tries to avoid it.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Surtr feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to McNeil's calf.
Both fighters circling a little - Surtr finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.
Surtr throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Surtr lunges at McNeil with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by McNeil's hand.
Jason McNeil is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Surtr plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
Argo Surtr has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Surtr lands with a kick to the temple. McNeil shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Surtr feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to McNeil's calf.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
McNeil moves out of range of the body kick from Surtr.
Surtr moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.

And that's the end of the fight!
Argo Surtr showed his dominance in that final round.
I think McNeil has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
