PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Alexander Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rebel Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Johnson comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Players Ball by Outkast kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Alexander Gracie could well score a knockout today. He has the power to get to Rebel Johnson's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Alexander Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Rebel Johnson!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Chad Campbell and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gracie shoots in and drives through. Johnson sprawls well.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Johnson is defended easily by Gracie.
Gracie shoots in but no luck this time.
Gracie defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Johnson.
Johnson fails with a takedown attempt.
Alexander Gracie has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rebel Johnson.
Johnson shoots and misses

so Gracie counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Gracie trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Gracie trying to control the position from guard on top but Johnson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Gracie accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Gracie stands and steps away. Johnson gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Gracie shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Johnson sprawls well. Johnson wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gracie gets slowly back to his feet.
Gracie shoots for a takedown but Johnson saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Johnson changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Gracie tries to avoid it but Johnson manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Gracie to the ground. Gracie escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Gracie fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Johnson doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Gracie counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Gracie postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Johnson is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Gracie, into his guard.
Gracie is breathing heavily.
Johnson wants to control from the top but Gracie keeps moving.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Johnson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gracie swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Johnson slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Johnson throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Gracie works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Rebel Johnson wasn't active enough on the ground.
Gracie shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Johnson sprawls well. Johnson wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gracie gets slowly back to his feet.
Gracie shoots in for a takedown but Johnson shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Johnson throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gracie's waist but Gracie gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Johnson off to one side.
Johnson shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Gracie pinned against the cage. Gracie gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Johnson throwing strikes here but Gracie is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.

Johnson is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Gracie has managed to escape the submission attempt.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Gracie is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Alexander Gracie will probably get the nod.

Johnson bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Johnson is looking to take a break and control but Gracie is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Johnson is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Gracie has escaped the position, nice work there.
Rebel Johnson has got the better of the ground game so far.

Johnson decides to stand back up. Johnson steps back and let's Gracie get back to his feet.

Johnson looking to sit in guard and control but Gracie gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Johnson thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Rebel Johnson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Johnson seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Johnson seems to be looking for submissions.
Johnson drops an elbow to the side of Gracie's head.
Gracie is trying to get back to full guard.

Johnson is pressing down on Gracie's thigh, looking to free his foot. Gracie is holding on for now.

Johnson is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Gracie doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Johnson.

Johnson seems to be working for a kimura but Gracie defends the submission attempt.

Johnson is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Gracie has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Johnson is working away from the top position though.

Rebel Johnson comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Johnson has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
