Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Darius Kasparaitis! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Griffin Kongo! The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, Jorge Garcia and Bruno Lombardi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kasparaitis checks a leg kick nicely. Kasparaitis moves out of range as Kongo throws a body kick.
Kasparaitis lands a nice shot that snaps Kongo's head back.
It looks like Griffin Kongo has been cut. Kasparaitis gets in close and instigates a clinch. Kasparaitis stops a takedown attempt from Kongo.
Kongo has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Kasparaitis avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch. Kongo pulls Kasparaitis into guard.
Kongo wants to sweep here but Kasparaitis controlling him for the moment. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Kongo is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Kasparaitis is aware though and is defending well. Kongo is trying to control the position from the bottom.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Kasparaitis tries to free his leg and advance position but Kongo is retaining full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kasparaitis throwing strikes but missing. Kongo is controlling Kasparaitis's posture. Kongo working a defensive guard here.
OK we're going to have a standup here. Griffin Kongo hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Kongo throws a head kick but Kasparaitis moves out of range.
Kongo moves to clinch but Kasparaitis breaks away and Kasparaitis counters with a good low kick that Kongo was not able to check. Kongo takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Kongo doesn't succeed with the takedown and Kasparaitis cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Darius Kasparaitis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Griffin Kongo. This has been an exciting period of action! Kongo keeps the fight on the outside.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kongo tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Kasparaitis paws at him with a jab and circles away. The fight moves into the clinch position. Kongo is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Kasparaitis is keeping busy. Kasparaitis breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Kasparaitis lands a left and a right that send Kongo crashing to the mat, dazed. Kasparaitis thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!
Kongo is rocked! Kongo is keeping his hands low and just asking to be knocked out. Kasparaitis Raises his leg and lands a stunning axe kick! Kongo is out cold, face down on the mat!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:37 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Head Kick). Darius Kasparaitis!
