PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Anderson Wand (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Royce Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Gracie's choice of entrance music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4Zsffydebg&feature=related. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Anderson Wand! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Royce Gracie! The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Matheus Silva and Seu Braga.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gracie shoots in for a double leg but Wand sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Gracie has Wand up against the cage in a clinch.
Gracie tries for a takedown but Wand manages to get underhooks.
Gracie tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Anderson Wand has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Royce Gracie. Gracie drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Wand gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Gracie avoiding damage as Wand throws knees to the body.
Gracie keeps control of Wand as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks. Wand working Gracie over with knees to the body. Gracie tries for a takedown. No joy.
Gracie is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.

That's one minute gone in the round. Wand wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Gracie is trying to drag Wand to the mat but Wand just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. Gracie breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Wand forces Gracie back against the cage and clinches. Wand is looking to break free of the clinch but Gracie has double underhooks. Gracie gets a trip takedown into half guard. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Gracie working over Wand with some ground and pound. Wand looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Gracie has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Gracie frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Wand tries to lock up and control but Gracie gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gracie controlling from the full mount. It looks like Gracie might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Wand wants to control but Gracie is having none of it. Gracie controlling from the full mount.
That's three minutes gone in the round.
The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Royce Gracie. Gracie is looking to clinch. Gracie moves into range and clinches up with Wand. Gracie is trying to drag Wand to the mat but Wand just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. Wand throws a knee to the head but misses.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Wand prevents the takedown attempt.
Gracie breaks the clinch.
Gracie shoots in and drives through. Wand sprawls well. Gracie looks gassed! Wand lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Wand stuffs the takedown attempt from Gracie. Gracie gets slowly back to his feet. Wand dips down and scores with a jab to the body. A solid body kick from Wand. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Wand scores to the head and body with a nice combination! Wand throws a good cross that connects.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Wand closes the distance and lands a one-two. Wand scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction. Gracie tries to keep at a distance but Wand has taken the fight into the clinch. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Anderson Wand dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Wand scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction. Wand gets a clinch. Gracie breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Wand stuffs the takedown attempt from Gracie. Gracie gets slowly back to his feet. Wand throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Gracie. No joy there for Wand, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Nice body punch from Wand. Gracie fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Wand lands with a right hand. Wand throws a one two combo.
Anderson Wand is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Wand digs a good hook to Gracie's body.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gracie throws a right and a left that both miss. Wand fails to land with a series of punches.
Horrible takedown by Gracie or perhaps it was just good defense by Wand which made him look bad. Anderson Wand has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Royce Gracie. Gracie plants his feet and lands a nice head kick! Wand displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Gracie. Gracie throws a head kick that Wand semi-blocks.
Left hook, right uppercut from Wand. Wand walks into a straight right hand from Gracie. Wand swinging wildly here.
Anderson Wand seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Gracie blocks a head kick by Wand.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gracie moves into the clinch. Wand stops a takedown attempt from Gracie.
Gracie prevents a body shot from Wand. Wand tries to stall but Gracie uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Gracie is trying to drag Wand to the mat but Wand just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. Gracie escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Anderson Wand is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Wand throws a series of strikes that have Gracie backpedaling.
Gracie moves into the clinch.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The referee calls for Gracie to work.
Gracie manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back. Wand trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Wand looking to sit in guard and control but Gracie gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Wand is working an open guard so Gracie takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Gracie closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Gracie is chipping away with strikes.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Wand is looking to reverse the position. Gracie works to advance to full mount. Wand defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs. Gracie connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Gracie content just to control the position here. Gracie lands a big elbow. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Gracie controlling from the full mount. Gracie fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Royce Gracie showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!
Wand takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Gracie takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor. Wand has taken the fight to the clinch.
Wand lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!
Wand gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Gracie.
Gracie has Wand pressed against the cage, preventing Wand from circling away and getting back to striking at range. Gracie keeps control of Wand as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Wand working aggressively here.
Gracie turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Gracie manages to end up in side control. Gracie moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
That's one minute gone in the round. A control attempt from Wand but he's now mounted! Gracie controlling the position easily from mount. Gracie working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Wand looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Gracie! Submission of the night perhaps?
