The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hirvonen looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Kuusela is fending him off so far but Hirvonen persists. Nope, Kuusela circles away and we're back to standing.

and Kuusela counters with a big head kick but Hirvonen shrugs it off.

Hirvonen lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Kuusela down.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hirvonen works to advance to full mount. Kuusela defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Kuusela sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Hirvonen is looking to take a break and control but Kuusela is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Hirvonen is pressing down on Kuusela's thigh, looking to free his foot. Kuusela is holding on for now.
