Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Grey! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 1, fighting out of New York, Jim Jakes! The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Jonathan Paton and Franklyn Lucas.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Grey looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Grey is working for a kimura but Jakes is defending it quite comfortably.
Nice strikes from Grey there. Grey wants to pass the guard but Jakes is defending well. Jakes kicks Grey off and gets back to his feet. Jakes swinging wilding here.
Grey darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Grey is working for a kimura but Jakes is defending it quite comfortably.
Grey is looking to advance position but Jakes won't allow it. Jakes is trying to stand up here but Grey is controlling him well.
That's one minute gone in the round. Grey lands with a punch from half guard. Grey has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Jakes flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

Jakes tries to get to full guard but Grey has control of the leg. Grey thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Jakes's head. We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Jakes has eaten all the pies! Grey tries to pass the half guard into mount. Jakes knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Grey is breathing heavily. Jakes is trying to stand.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground. Jakes misses with a wild combination.
Grey closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Jakes manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu! Jakes throwing shots but Grey is blocking nicely. Grey punching from the bottom.
Grey wants to get back to full guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Jakes wants to pass the guard but Grey is defending well. Jakes looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Grey with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Jakes landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. Grey is looking to improve his position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground. Grey shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Grey showed some decent athleticism there. Jakes missing with punches from the bottom.
Jakes has one foot on Grey's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet. Grey shoots in and drives through. Jakes sprawls well. Jakes is looking to clinch but Grey is avoiding it.
No luck for Grey with that takedown attempt. Grey moves forwards but Jakes connects with a nice, crisp jab. Jakes steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Grey. Jakes tries to clinch but Grey moves out of range. Grey looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Grey seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Grey is looking for a kimura but Jakes is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Grey to get the leverage. Grey is working for a submission of some sort.

The fighters are battling for position here. Jakes manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Grey stands up over Jakes, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Jakes is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Grey is in close to Jakes's body, working some short punches and elbows. Jakes looking to hit a scissor sweep but Grey is one step ahead there.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Grey is pushing down on Jakes's leg trying to pass to half guard. Jakes is fighting to maintain full guard but Grey has managed to sneak the leg through. Grey looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Jakes tries to roll over but Grey keeps him under control. Grey will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Grey prevents Jakes from standing back up.
Grey landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. Jakes is looking to escape. Jakes slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Jakes wants to get back to his feet but Grey is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Jakes had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Grey is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Jakes Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Grey's back instead. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Jakes is working the ground and pound here and the referee is taking a close look at Grey. He must escape soon or this one will be stopped. Jakes lands with a big left hand that may well have hurt his opponent. Can Grey hold on?!
Jakes throwing strikes from the back - he gets a warning from the referee for striking the back of the head but all these shots are hurting Grey!
Grey breaks Jakes's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
John Grey dominated that round. That's time! Grey's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Jakes throws a right hand that Grey ducks under and follows up with a left that Grey also avoids with ease. Excellent takedown into side control there by Grey. Jakes sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. Jakes missing with punches from the bottom.
