Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Rick Piper! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Manu Vatuvei! The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Winston Howard and Skip Squint.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Vatuvei darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Piper taking some punishment here, with Vatuvei in his half guard. Piper trying to control here.
Vatuvei seems to be looking for submissions.

Piper tries to get back to half guard but can't. Vatuvei working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. This has been an exciting period of action! Vatuvei tries to advance to mount but Piper denies him.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Piper wants to control but Vatuvei postures up. Piper is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control. Piper really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Vatuvei tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Piper is trying to improve his position. Piper struggling a bit here. Piper is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Vatuvei off and has taken his back! Vatuvei rolls, trying to escape but Piper keeps control of the position.

Vatuvei defends a prolonged rear naked choke attempt and turns nicely into his opponent's guard. Piper throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Piper being controlled here, momentarily. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Vatuvei landing some decent shots from guard. Piper is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Vatuvei is aware though and is defending well. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Piper misses with a takedown attempt - Vatuvei sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Vatuvei drives through with a takedown into guard. Piper looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Vatuvei lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Vatuvei trying to control but he's not successful this time.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Vatuvei landing strikes, looking to finish! BOOM! Vatuvei connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Vatuvei breaks from Piper's wrist control and lands an elbow. Piper tries to reverse the position but Vatuvei maintains control. Vatuvei lands a nice shot to the head. Vatuvei controlling the pace for now. Manu Vatuvei has got the better of the ground game so far. Vatuvei avoids the attempt from Piper to control. Vatuvei trying to control but he's not successful this time. Vatuvei controlling his opponent.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Piper taking shots to the head. Vatuvei has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Vatuvei is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Piper can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
