Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Gary Phillips! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Jess Mick! The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, Andrew Berry and William Gold.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Phillips drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Phillips could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Mick is trying to control Phillips's posture but Phillips avoids it. Mick takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Mick trying to remain calm as Phillips controls from the top position. Mick really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Phillips. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Phillips advances to mount. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Mick wants to hold on but Phillips pushes him away. Phillips get's back to his feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Phillips avoids the head kick by Mick.
Phillips clinches up against the cage. Phillips breaks from the clinch.
Mick fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Phillips gets a double leg takedown into Mick's guard. Phillips showing good wrestling skills to control the position. Phillips has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Phillips lands a couple of digs. Phillips makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Phillips slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Mick looks gassed! This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Phillips with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Phillips passes into half guard. Phillips in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Mick tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Phillips!
