The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Rojo has had enough of the clinch but Smithers keeps him there for the moment.

Rojo is trying to control Smithers's posture but Smithers avoids it.
Smithers remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Smithers creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Rojo sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Smithers tries to score a power double leg takedown but Rojo sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Smithers somewhat.
Rojo cracks a nice hook into Smithers's ribs.
Smithers is breathing heavily.
Smithers looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Rojo throws a 1-2 combo that connects squarely on Smithers's jaw, knocking him onto his back! Rojo dives in looking to finish as Smithers flails his arms in a desperate attempt to block Rojo's strikes! Rojo is raining down hammerfists and the ref stops it! Smithers's desperate flailing just didn't constitute intelligent defence. Some people will probably question the ref's decision but Smithers was definitely hurt and the ref saved him from taking unnecessary punishment. A fighter's safety is paramount in this sport.
