PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Wa Sa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shin Nawasaki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sa comes to the cage accompanied by Fat Lip. Shin Nawasaki told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Wa Sa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Shin Nawasaki!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Shigeki Fujiwara and Ren Mimura.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sa misses with a head kick.

Nawasaki throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Sa tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Nawasaki is in Sa's guard.
Nawasaki working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Sa wants to sweep but no luck.
Sa wants to get back to his feet but Nawasaki passes into half guard.
Sa trying to control here.
Nawasaki landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Sa wants to get back to full guard.
Sa preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.

Sa is looking for a sweep. Nawasaki is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Nawasaki trying to control the action but Sa is working from the bottom.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Shin Nawasaki was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Sa is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Sa shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Nawasaki sprawls well. Nawasaki wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Sa gets slowly back to his feet.

Nawasaki swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Sa counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Sa.
Sa unloads a knee to the mid-section.
Nawasaki is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Nawasaki looks gassed!

Sa manages to pull guard.
Sa trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Shin Nawasaki has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Sa lands a high kick!
Sa moves in looking to clinch but Nawasaki pushes him off.
Nawasaki stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Nawasaki wants it to stay on the feet.
Sa misses with a takedown attempt - Nawasaki sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Wa Sa. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sa moves out of range of the body kick from Nawasaki.

Sa gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

This has been an exciting period of action!

Sa jumps guard and drags Nawasaki to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Nawasaki decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Sa clinches up with Nawasaki and pushes him back against the cage.
Nawasaki jumps guard but Sa stands there with Nawasaki around his waist. Nawasaki gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Sa gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Sa scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Sa lands strikes from half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Wa Sa dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Sa lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Wa Sa is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Horrible takedown by Sa or perhaps it was just good defense by Nawasaki which made him look bad.
Sa shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Nawasaki counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sa looking for a sweep. Not yet Sa, not yet.
Nawasaki throwing strikes but missing.
Nawasaki wants to control from the top but Sa keeps moving.
Sa wants to sweep here but Nawasaki controlling him for the moment.
Nawasaki is breathing heavily.
Sa not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Shin Nawasaki has got the better of the ground game so far.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Sa manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Sa might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Nawasaki would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Sa knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Nawasaki on the ground.

Sa manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Nawasaki manages to get himself to full guard.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Sa accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Sa passes Nawasaki's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Sa is nestled in close to Nawasaki, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Sa lands a nice short elbow.

Nawasaki wants to improve his position but Sa is controlling well.
Sa slips a nice elbow through Nawasaki's hands, connecting with Nawasaki's forehead.

Sa is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Sa is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Nawasaki has escaped the position, nice work there.

Sa is putting a hurting on Nawasaki here, landing some big shots from side control.

Nawasaki is still in real trouble! Can Sa finish him?

Sa tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Sa is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Nawasaki knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Sa cracks Nawasaki with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Nawasaki takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Nawasaki gets back to half guard.

Sa is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Nawasaki is just riding it out for now. Sa eventually gives up the hold.
Sa working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Nawasaki is trying to get back to full guard.
Sa wants to stand up but Nawasaki has a hold of him and won't allow it.

Sa is looking for a kimura here.

Sa is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Nawasaki doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Sa.
Shin Nawasaki has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Wa Sa is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Sa wants to take a breather but Nawasaki is having none of it.

Wa Sa showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Sa has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
