PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Wiggins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mika Ralte (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wiggins has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, John Wiggins!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Mika Ralte!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Igor Prikhodko and Illya Tyunina.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ralte shoots in looking for a takedown. Wiggins tries to sprawl out of it but Ralte keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Wiggins manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Ralte shoots in for a double leg but Wiggins sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Wiggins throws a lazy head kick

and Ralte decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Wiggins's guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Ralte works over Wiggins with some ground and pound from guard.
Wiggins keeping moving, preventing Ralte from controlling successfully.
Ralte controls from within his opponent's guard.
Ralte trying to control but Wiggins is working from the bottom.

Ralte decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Wiggins, up you get!
Wiggins is breathing heavily.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Ralte throws a nice head kick!

Ralte manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Wiggins on his heels. He'll look to pass Wiggins's guard now, I'm sure.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Ralte wants to control from the top but Wiggins keeps moving.
Ralte is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Ralte makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Ralte wanted to stand there but Wiggins had control of the position.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Mika Ralte hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Ralte pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Wiggins back to the cage. Ralte follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
Wiggins tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Ralte manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Wiggins tries to keep at a distance but Ralte has taken the fight into the clinch.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Ralte tries to pull guard but Wiggins won't allow it.
John Wiggins has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mika Ralte.

Wiggins gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Wiggins wants to stand but Ralte has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Ralte regains full guard. Nicely done.

Ralte had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Wiggins defends it easily.
Ralte looking for a sweep. Not yet Ralte, not yet.
Wiggins pushes down on Ralte's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Wiggins is looking for a kimura but Ralte is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Wiggins to get the leverage.
Ralte is trying to control but can't.

Ralte is looking to improve his position.
Ralte is refusing to be controlled, as Wiggins sits in half guard.
Wiggins working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Ralte wants to control but Wiggins is keeping busy.
Ralte might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Wiggins kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Wiggins passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Ralte!
Ralte is squirming around, avoiding Wiggins's attempts to control the action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mika Ralte dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Ralte rushes Wiggins and presses him up against the cage.
Ralte tries to work over Wiggins's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

Wiggins escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Ralte throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Wiggins checks a leg kick.

Ralte drives through and clinches with Wiggins against the cage.
Wiggins throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Ralte blocks it with crossed arms.
Ralte tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Wiggins just stands there and leans against the cage.
Wiggins prevents a takedown attempt there.
Ralte goes for a takedown in the clinch but Wiggins prevents it.
John Wiggins has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mika Ralte.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Ralte drops down looking for an ankle pick but Wiggins pulls his leg out and moves away.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Wiggins blocks the body kick.
Wiggins looks to clinch
and Ralte counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Ralte throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Wiggins tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Ralte is in Wiggins's guard.
Ralte tries to free his leg and advance position but Wiggins is retaining full guard.

Wiggins is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Ralte defends well.
Ralte really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Wiggins. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Wiggins throws some sloppy strikes off his back.

Ralte gets to his feet. Wiggins looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Ralte drives through and clinches with Wiggins against the cage.

Wiggins manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Ralte pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Wiggins is keeping the position for now.
Ralte wants to stand but Wiggins has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Wiggins looking for a guillotine here but Ralte defends easily.

Wiggins is looking for a triangle here but Ralte uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

Wiggins throws a few strikes from the bottom but Ralte takes advantage and mounts!
Ralte trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Ralte is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Wiggins is desperately trying to improve his position but Ralte has a good base and remains in mount.
Ralte takes Wiggins's back, avoiding a couple of desperation strikes from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Wiggins staying busy and making it hard for Ralte to control.

Ralte patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here?

Ralte connects with a big shot to the side of Wiggins's head.

Ralte is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Wiggins is defending well though. Ralte let's go of the attempt for now.

Wiggins breaks Ralte's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mika Ralte showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Ralte throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Wiggins throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Wiggins stuffs the takedown attempt from Ralte. Ralte gets slowly back to his feet.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Ralte.
Wiggins shoots in for a takedown but Ralte shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Ralte fails with a takedown attempt.
John Wiggins has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mika Ralte.
Wiggins slaps away a takedown attempt from Ralte, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Wiggins looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Ralte is fending him off so far but Wiggins persists. Nope, Ralte circles away and we're back to standing.

Ralte will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Ralte throws a series of punches but Wiggins moves out of range.

Wiggins moves into the clinch.
Ralte dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.

Wiggins has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Ralte clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Wiggins patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here?

Wiggins is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Ralte has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.

Ralte tries to get to his feet, scrambling wildly. Wiggins sees the opportunity and transitions to an armbar that forces Ralte to tap. Impressive finish!
