Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Queli Ribeiro! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Mike Materson! The judges for this bout are James Atkins, Daniel Bishop and Andrew Berry.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ribeiro looking to score a takedown here. Materson is defending well but Ribeiro drives through and ends up in Materson's guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ribeiro has gone for a leg lock! Materson slips out almost immediately though and dives into Ribeiro's guard. Materson trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Materson is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Materson postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Ribeiro is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Materson, into his guard. Materson wants to control but Ribeiro passes easily into half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ribeiro is trying to work for a kimura but Materson is defending well.
Ribeiro misses with a head shot. Materson uses the momentum to regain guard. Ribeiro trying to control but Materson is working from the bottom. Ribeiro postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Materson is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Ribeiro, into his guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Materson looking to sit in guard and control but Ribeiro gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Ribeiro is fighting to break Materson's control of his arms but Materson is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Ribeiro postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Materson is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Ribeiro, into his guard. Ribeiro keeping full guard, as Materson tries to pass.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ribeiro is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Materson looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Ribeiro trying to control the position here. Materson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Ribeiro swivels though and keeps the full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Materson is looking to work some ground and pound but Ribeiro has wrist control. Materson must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Materson drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Ribeiro is being controlled here. Ribeiro is looking for a sweep. Ribeiro can't do much from the bottom here. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Materson is looking to take a break and control but Ribeiro is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Materson working away. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Mike Materson will probably get the nod. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Ribeiro shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Materson is trying to defend but Ribeiro finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Materson manages to get to full guard.
Ribeiro stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Materson swivels though and keeps the full guard. Mike Materson has got the better of the ground game so far. Materson is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Ribeiro looking to pass the guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Materson keeping moving, preventing Ribeiro from controlling successfully. Ribeiro trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Ribeiro drops back, looking for a kneebar! Materson looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Materson looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Materson! Materson tries to move to mount but Ribeiro blocks the move with his legs. Ribeiro being controlled for a moment.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ribeiro is trying to control Materson's posture but Materson avoids it. Materson in side control, just content to control the action for now. Ribeiro is looking to regain half guard here but Materson keeps moving and retains side control. Materson moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Ribeiro manages to work his way to half guard, despite Materson's best efforts. Materson looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Ribeiro is trying to get back to full guard. Ribeiro blocking the ground and pound attempt from Materson.
OK we're going to have a standup here. Mike Materson hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Ribeiro decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Ribeiro is stalling here. Materson is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Ribeiro seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Materson has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work. Ribeiro is looking to reverse the position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ribeiro is being controlled here. Ribeiro is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Materson has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Ribeiro! Materson tries to control but Ribeiro wriggling away. Materson controlling from mount. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close second round but I would say that Queli Ribeiro will probably get the nod. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!
Ribeiro thuds a left hand into Materson's body. Ribeiro gets a double leg takedown into Materson's guard. Materson keeping full guard, as Ribeiro tries to pass. Ribeiro trying to control but Materson is working from the bottom. Ribeiro preventing the sweep. Materson has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ribeiro thows a big elbow that misses. Ribeiro postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Ribeiro wants to control from the top but Materson keeps moving. Materson bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Ribeiro's guard. Ribeiro keeping moving, preventing Materson from controlling successfully. Ribeiro wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Ribeiro walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Materson checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side. Ribeiro closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Materson is trying to get back to full guard. Ribeiro is trying to work for a kimura but Materson is defending well.
Ribeiro thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ribeiro thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Materson's head. Ribeiro is looking to stall here but Materson recovers full guard. Ribeiro wants to control from the top but Materson keeps moving. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Materson holds on and takes a little breather. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Materson can do anything to dispel that myth.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ribeiro trying to control but Materson is working from the bottom. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Queli Ribeiro wasn't doing enough on the ground. Ribeiro fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Materson to the ground. Ribeiro is now in Materson's guard. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Materson is on top in guard.
Ribeiro pulls Materson in close to prevent any damage. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Materson wants to control from the top but Ribeiro keeps moving. Materson is working Ribeiro over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
And that's the end of the fight! Queli Ribeiro showed his dominance in that final round. Well Ribeiro has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
