The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ahmed looking to score a takedown here. Philips is defending well but Ahmed drives through and ends up in Philips's guard. Ahmed engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Ahmed pushing down on Philips's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Ahmed is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Philips defends it well. Ahmed passes to side control. Ahmed thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Ahmed moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ahmed throwing strikes but missing, from side control. Philips is not content to let Ahmed control the position. A lull in the action here. Philips on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Philips tries to get out of the position. Ahmed goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Philips rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Ahmed's guard! Nice work there by Philips!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Philips wants to stand but Ahmed has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Ahmed is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Philips rolls with it to try and escape but Ahmed cranks on the arm and Philips is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:49 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Yannick Ahmed!
