Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Curtis Dodson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gray Maynard! The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, Jorge Garcia and Jonathan Paton.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Maynard misses with a body kick. Maynard tries to close the distance and clinch but Dodson swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Maynard takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him. Gray Maynard seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Dodson turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick. Dodson looks to land a combination. Maynard sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots. Dodson shoots in for a takedown and gets it. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Dodson not doing much here.
Dodson is trying to control the action in half guard but Maynard is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Maynard has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Dodson is working away from the top position though. Maynard wants to get back to his feet.

We're going to have a standup here because Curtis Dodson wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Dodson tests Maynard's chin there with a solid looking shot. Maynard shoots in and drives through. Dodson sprawls well. Maynard takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it. Nice takedown defense from Dodson. No joy for Maynard on that attempt. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. A momentary lapse in concentration from Dodson enables Maynard to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Dodson manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Dodson throws a quick inside leg kick. Dodson keeps the fight on the outside. Dodson scores with a hook to the body. Maynard takes a step back and tries to catch his breath. Maynard tries for a takedown but Dodson sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Dodson lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Maynard at a distance.
Nice takedown defense from Dodson. No joy for Maynard on that attempt. Maynard shoots in but Dodson avoids the takedown attempt easily. Curtis Dodson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Gray Maynard. Dodson dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Maynard is breathing heavily. A left and a right from Dodson both land. Nice combination. Dodson lands a jab to Maynard's midsection.
That's one minute gone in the round. Maynard takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him. Maynard bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Dodson is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Dodson desperately trying to maintain half guard. Maynard takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Dodson is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Maynard pulls his head out easily. Dodson is trying to maintain the position but Maynard is very close to passing his half guard. Dodson wants to control but Maynard passes into side.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Maynard in side control lands a decent elbow. Dodson wants to control but Maynard postures up. Dodson on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Dodson tries to get out of the position. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Maynard laying and praying for a moment but Dodson takes advantage and regains half guard. Dodson makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Dodson. Dodson working a defensive guard here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Maynard won't allow Dodson to sweep him here. Dodson is pulling down on Maynard's head. It's preventing any offense from Maynard, at least for the moment. Dodson wants to sweep but no luck. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The ref stands the fighters back up because Curtis Dodson just wasn't active enough. Nice shot by Dodson. A nice inside leg kick there by Dodson. That's going to slow Maynard down. Maynard fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Maynard takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Maynard takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Dodson stuffs the takedown. Maynard tries to score a power double leg takedown but Dodson sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Maynard somewhat. Maynard misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Maynard with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Dodson to score with a decent uppercut. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Dodson throws a nice outside leg kick. Dodson connects with a nice looking jab.

Curtis Dodson dominated that second round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.
Maynard drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Maynard is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Dodson is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Maynard tries to move into full mount but can't pass Dodson's legs. Dodson struggling a bit here. Curtis Dodson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Dodson sneaks back into half guard. Dodson makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Dodson. Maynard takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Dodson looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Maynard is fighting to break Dodson's control of his arms but Dodson is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Maynard looking to pass the guard. Dodson is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Maynard defends well. Maynard is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Maynard takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Curtis Dodson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. No luck with that takedown attempt from Dodson. Dodson is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches. Maynard shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Dodson pinned against the cage. Dodson gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Dodson tests Maynard's chin there with a solid looking shot.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Dodson showing good wrestling skills to control the position. Maynard is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Maynard is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Dodson is stalling in the full guard. Gray Maynard has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Dodson works a leg free and moves into half guard.
And that's the end of the fight! Curtis Dodson showed his dominance in that final round. Well Dodson has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
