Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Shane Dawes! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Radik Iboyan! The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Igor Prikhodko and Valeri Chadov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Dawes looking to score a takedown here. Iboyan is defending well but Dawes drives through and ends up in Iboyan's guard. Iboyan is looking for a triangle here but Dawes uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Dawes looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Dawes swings around for an armbar but Iboyan sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Dawes's guard. Dawes keeping moving, preventing Iboyan from controlling successfully. Dawes seems keen to control Iboyan's posture. Iboyan slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Dawes is looking for a sweep.
That's one minute gone in the round. Iboyan is trying to get an arm triangle but Dawes is defending well. Iboyan wants to lay and pray for a moment but Dawes keeps working. Dawes on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Dawes tries to get out of the position. Dawes tries to get back to half guard but can't. Iboyan scores with a couple of short elbows. Dawes can't do much from the bottom here. Dawes manages to get back to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Iboyan is stalling here. Dawes is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Iboyan seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Dawes has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work. Iboyan is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Dawes off and has taken his back! Dawes turns into Iboyan and is now in his guard.
Iboyan not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Dawes looking to sit in guard and control but Iboyan gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Dawes is pulling down on Iboyan's head to control his posture. Dawes is striking but Iboyan is not phased and passes to half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Iboyan performing his best blanket impression for a moment. Iboyan throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Iboyan wants to lay and pray for a moment but Dawes keeps working. Dawes wants to improve his position but Iboyan is controlling well.
Iboyan trying to control from Dawes's half guard. Dawes has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Dawes pulls Iboyan in close to prevent any damage.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Dawes gets caught napping as Iboyan dives in and scores a takedown. Dawes manages to retain guard. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Iboyan trying to control but Dawes is working from the bottom. Dawes looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Shane Dawes will probably get the nod. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Iboyan wants to clinch. Dawes has closed the distance and engaged Iboyan in a clinch.
Dawes effectively controlling the action here. Iboyan drags the fight down to the ground.
Iboyan is pulling down on Dawes's head to control his posture. Iboyan controls Dawes momentarily but Dawes frees himself. Dawes is looking to work some ground and pound but Iboyan has wrist control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Iboyan trying to control the position.
Dawes trying to control but Iboyan is working from the bottom.
Radik Iboyan has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet. Dawes misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Iboyan fails to land the takedown. Dawes shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Dawes was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Iboyan can't escape the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Dawes is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Iboyan can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Dawes lands a heavy elbow. Dawes punishing his opponent with strikes. Dawes lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
This has been an exciting period of action! Dawes avoids the attempt from Iboyan to control. Dawes landing shots from mount. Iboyan gets back to half guard. Dawes wants to take a breather but Iboyan is having none of it. Iboyan gets full guard. Iboyan is breathing heavily. Iboyan has his foot on Dawes's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Dawes works his way back into a safe position though.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Iboyan has a closed guard, preventing Dawes from standing up. Dawes controlling from the top position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Dawes throws a big right hand that misses. Iboyan wants to improve his position but instead Dawes has moved into half guard.
Iboyan wants to get back to full guard but Dawes has passed into side control. Dawes decides to stand back up.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Dawes is trying hard to land a takedown here. Iboyan sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Iboyan closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Iboyan gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Dawes.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Shane Dawes. That's going to take a lot out of him. Dawes goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Dawes has Iboyan pressed against the cage, preventing Iboyan from circling away and getting back to striking at range. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Dawes tries for a takedown. No joy.
Iboyan wants to get back to striking at distance but Dawes won't allow it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Shane Dawes dominated that second round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.
Dawes stuffs the takedown. Dawes shoots in but no luck this time. Iboyan will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Dawes changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Iboyan tries to avoid it but Dawes manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Iboyan to the ground. Iboyan escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Iboyan misses with an attempted mid kick.
Iboyan tries to clinch but Dawes moves out of range. Dawes throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Dawes drives through and clinches with Iboyan against the cage.
Iboyan is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage. Dawes works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard. Iboyan trying to keep a closed guard but Dawes is proving a slippery customer.
That's one minute gone in the round. Dawes stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Iboyan swivels though and keeps the full guard. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Iboyan wants to control the position but Dawes says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard. Shane Dawes overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Iboyan wants to get back to full guard. Iboyan is in trouble now - Dawes has advanced to mount! Iboyan wants to control but Dawes is having none of it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Iboyan is desperately trying to improve his position but Dawes has a good base and remains in mount. Iboyan throwing hammer fists to the chest of Dawes. What's that going to do exactly? Iboyan is in all sorts of trouble here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Dawes wants to control the pace but Iboyan is squirming around nicely. Iboyan working to try and regain half guard.
Dawes sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Iboyan swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Dawes lands with some strikes. Dawes trying to control but Iboyan is having none of it. Iboyan is trying to escape the mount.
Dawes swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Iboyan is now in Dawes's guard. A big mistake from Dawes there, giving up the dominant position! Dawes avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Dawes looking for a guillotine here but Iboyan defends easily.
Iboyan trying to control the position from guard on top but Dawes is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Radik Iboyan has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Shane Dawes is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Dawes looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
And that's the end of the fight! Shane Dawes showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Dawes, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
