Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Eddie Cheung! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Nobuhiko Takada! The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Yukihiro Shimada.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Takada throws a lazy right hand but Cheung sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Nobuhiko Takada seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. A cross from Cheung lands. Takada shoots in but Cheung avoids the takedown attempt easily. Cheung throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Takada rushes Cheung and pushes him back against the ropes in a clinch. Takada is trying to force a seperation but Cheung has the dominant position. Cheung wants to break free but Takada has control.
Takada is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Cheung pulls him back up using the underhooks. Takada tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Eddie Cheung has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nobuhiko Takada. Takada can't break the clinch.
Cheung is looking to break free of the clinch but Takada has double underhooks. Takada throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Cheung blocks it with crossed arms. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Takada has Cheung pressed against the ropes, preventing Cheung from circling away and getting back to striking at range. Takada keeps control of Cheung as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
That's one minute gone in the round. Takada tries for a takedown. No joy.
Cheung breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Cheung fails to land with a series of punches.
Takada tries to clinch but Cheung moves away and Cheung cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Cheung tries to close the distance and clinch but Takada swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Cheung comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range. Takada looks gassed! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Cheung throws a series of punches but Takada moves out of range. Takada looks to clinch and Cheung connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Cheung moves into the clinch. Takada trying to land knees to the body.
Cheung manages to break the clinch.
Cheung misses with a few strikes there.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cheung tries to close the distance and clinch up against the ropes but Takada paws at him with a jab and circles away. Cheung looks to land a combination. Takada sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots. Cheung misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
