PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Josh Diaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hughes is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: A Country Boy Can Survive. The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Josh Diaz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Matt Hughes!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Don Winkell and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hughes closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Hughes controlling the pace.
Diaz wants to get back to his feet.
Hughes keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Matt Hughes wasn't active enough on the ground.

Diaz gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Hughes to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Diaz wants to get back to his feet but Hughes is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Hughes controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Let's hope that Hughes has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Hughes won't allow Diaz to get back to his feet.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Hughes is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Matt Hughes has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Hughes shoots in looking for a takedown but Diaz manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Hughes's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Matt Hughes.
Diaz feints a jab promting Hughes to slip. Diaz then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Hughes slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.

Hughes fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Diaz to the ground. Hughes is now in Diaz's guard.
Hughes passes Diaz's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Hughes prevents Diaz from standing back up.
Hughes is controlling the pace.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Hughes's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Diaz pushes Hughes off looking to stand but Hughes dives back in and keeps control.
Hughes is taking a breather. Diaz says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Matt Hughes hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Hughes decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Hughes moves nicely into side control.

Diaz is trying to get back to his feet.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Hughes sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Diaz's guard.

Hughes takes Diaz's back. Could be looking for a rear naked choke here - either way, Diaz is in trouble.
Hughes has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Diaz's body.

Diaz is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
Hughes has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
I would not like to be Diaz right now.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Hughes is trying hard to land a takedown here. Diaz sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Diaz throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Diaz throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Hughes stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Diaz throws a nice looking combination but Hughes bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Hughes chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Diaz can pounce on him.
Horrible takedown by Hughes or perhaps it was just good defense by Diaz which made him look bad.
Diaz throws a series of punches but Hughes moves out of range.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Diaz tries to bum rush Hughes with a series of wild strikes but Hughes uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Hughes throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Diaz was covering up waiting for the punch and Hughes finishes the takedown easily into guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matt Hughes showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Hughes takes his opponent's back. Perhaps a chance to lock up a rear naked choke here.

Diaz is trying to get back to his feet but Hughes has full control of the position and if anything, Diaz has just worked his way into a worse spot.
