Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Nathanial Hornblower! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Anthony Pettis! The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Sosuke Kotani and Yukihiro Shimada.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Hornblower. Pettis dips to his left and cracks Hornblower with an uppercut! Some wild striking there from Pettis.
Hornblower shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Pettis keeping moving, preventing Hornblower from controlling successfully. Hornblower working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Pettis's head. Pettis really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Hornblower. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Hornblower prevents Pettis from getting back to his feet. Hornblower has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Pettis working a defensive guard here.
Pettis tries to land a sweep but no joy. Pettis wants to stand up but Hornblower is controlling him. Hornblower postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Hornblower working some strikes from top position. Pettis controlling Hornblower's posture. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Pettis is trying to control the position from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hornblower distracts Pettis with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Hornblower postures up and lands a big shot to Pettis's brow. Hornblower forces his way into half guard. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Pettis can do anything to dispel that myth. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Hornblower connects with a nice short shot to Pettis's temple. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Hornblower in particular looking to stall. Hornblower working over Pettis with some ground and pound. Pettis looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Hornblower works his way into full mount! Hornblower raining down shots from the mount!
Pettis is rocked! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Hornblower drops a big elbow. That's hurt Pettis! More shots from Hornblower and the ref steps in! The fight is over!
