PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kurt Angle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Stark (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kurt Angle!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, David Stark!
The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Summer Carpenter and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Angle tries a head kick but it misses.
Stark slips a jab and a cross from Angle.

Angle looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Stark!
Stark wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Angle.
Angle punching from mount but Stark doing a good job of avoiding damage.
Stark tries to hold on but Angle postures up.
Stark gets back to half guard.
Stark is trying to control but can't.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Angle looks to land a strike but Stark avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Angle thows a big elbow that misses.

Stark is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Angle is looking for a sweep. Stark is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Angle tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Angle missing with punches from the bottom.
Stark wants to control but Angle is keeping him busy.

Stark wants to lay and pray for a moment but Angle keeps working.
Angle is trying to get back to full guard.
Stark working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Angle throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Angle closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Angle is breathing heavily.
Stark can't do much from the bottom here.
Angle knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Stark on the ground.
Stark regains half guard.
Angle missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Angle tries to pass the half guard into mount. Stark knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Angle throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
The fighters are battling for position here. Stark manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Stark is trying to control the position but Angle postures up.
Stark will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Stark is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Angle is controlling him.
Angle throws and elbow that misses. Stark uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Angle's guard. Nice move by Stark!

Stark throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Angle works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Stark trying to control the position from guard on top but Angle is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Angle is striking off his back. Stark thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard.
Angle is trying to get back to full guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Angle throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Stark.
Stark blocks a head kick by Angle.
Stark is looking to clinch but Angle is avoiding it.
Stark just misses with a punch to the body.
Stark fails with the takedown

and Angle counters with a single leg into guard. Stark didn't expect that.
Angle could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Angle looking to sit in guard and control but Stark gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Angle throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Stark preventing the sweep.
Angle on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Angle tries to get out of the position.
Angle wants to improve his position but instead Stark has moved into half guard.
Angle trying to get back to full guard but Stark takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount!
Angle is in all sorts of trouble here.
Angle might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Angle tries to improve his position but instead Stark has taken his back!
Stark gets his hands free as Angle looks to control.
Stark keeps control of the position as Angle tries to break free.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Stark is throwing punches to the body, looking to soften Angle up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Kurt Angle will probably get the nod.
That's time! Angle's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Stark tries to lock up and control but Angle gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Stark bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Stark is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Stark works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Stark trying to mount his opponent but Angle defends it.
Angle misses with some strikes from the bottom.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Angle wants to control the action here but instead Stark manages to pass to full mount!

Kurt Angle overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

I really don't envy Angle right now.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.

Stark is pressed up against the cage. Angle has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Stark down to the mat. Stark avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Angle.
Stark takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
You can see the frustration on Stark's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Stark manages to work his way to half guard, despite Angle's best efforts.
Stark regains full guard. Nicely done.

Stark utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Stark bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Angle's guard.

Angle landing small, sideways elbows.

Angle strikes from the bottom but Stark uses the opportunity to move to side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but David Stark will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Angle closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Angle lands in his opponent's guard.
Stark wants to stand and escape but Angle is having none of it.
Angle stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Stark swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Stark manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Angle manages to get himself to full guard.
Stark trying to control but Angle is working from the bottom.

Stark thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Angle is trying to control the position but Stark postures up.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Angle throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Angle tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Angle thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Angle looking for a sweep. Not yet Angle, not yet.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Stark with a poor takedown

and Angle holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Angle is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Stark gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Stark pulls guard effortlessly.
Angle is looking to work some ground and pound but Stark has wrist control.

Stark working for a triangle but Angle defends it easily.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Angle shoots in but Stark avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Stark fails to land with a series of punches.

and Angle counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Angle.
