PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Lester Green (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Samoa Joe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Joe comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Sitting Sideways kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Samoa Joe has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Lester Green!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Samoa Joe!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Marco Blurström and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Green misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Joe gets caught flat footed, as Green shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Joe wants to sweep but no luck.
Green is looking to work some ground and pound but Joe has wrist control.
Joe controls Green momentarily but Green frees himself.

Joe working for a triangle but Green defends it easily.
Green tries to free his leg and advance position but Joe is retaining full guard.
Green throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Joe works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Green in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Joe wants to sweep but no luck.
Green working some strikes from top position.
Green will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Joe working for a triangle but Green defends it easily.
Joe controls Green momentarily but Green frees himself.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Joe is on top in guard.
Green avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Joe postures up and lands a big shot to Green's brow.

Green has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Joe can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Green manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Joe manages to get himself to full guard.
Joe utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Green controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Joe looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Green has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Joe is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Green throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Joe works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Green postures up and lands a big shot to Joe's brow.

Joe looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Green passes into half guard.

Green working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Green thows a huge punch but Joe dodges it nicely.

Joe blocking the ground and pound attempt from Green.
Joe avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Green.
Joe wants to control but Green is keeping busy.
Joe wants to improve his position but Green is controlling well.
Joe regains full guard. Nicely done.

Joe is trying to keep Green in close.
Green stands up over Joe, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Joe wants to sweep here but Green controlling him for the moment.
Green wants to control from the top but Joe keeps moving.
Green is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Joe is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Green won't allow Joe to sweep him here.
Joe has control of Green's left arm, preventing Green from doing any damage.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Green pushes Joe up against the cage in a clinch.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Joe wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Green has him pressed against the cage.
Joe looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Joe wants to break the clinch but can't.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Lester Green will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Joe throws out a loose jab but Green uses good head movement to avoid it.
Lester Green seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Green throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Joe tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Green is in Joe's guard.
Green throws and elbow that misses. Joe uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Green's guard. Nice move by Joe!
Joe working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Green's head.
Joe lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Green looking for a sweep. Not yet Green, not yet.

Lester Green overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Joe thows a big elbow that misses.

Green is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Joe is aware though and is defending well.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Joe with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Joe is looking to work some ground and pound but Green has wrist control.
Joe throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Green had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Joe defends it easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Joe accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Joe throwing strikes but missing.
Joe with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Green lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Joe!
Green avoids the attempt from Joe to control.
Green throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Joe is in a horrible position here. Green smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Joe can't escape the position.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

Joe wants to control but Green is having none of it.
Joe sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Green is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Joe is looking to control Green's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Joe avoid being mounted?
Joe is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Green's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Green's back!

Joe seems to be going for a rear naked choke. He has an arm under Green's chin but Green turns very nicely into Joe's guard. Good BJJ skills being displayed there by Green.

Green tries to free his leg and advance position but Joe is retaining full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Joe working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Green doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Green manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Joe manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Joe lands with some strikes.
Green keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

BOOM! Joe connects with a massive shot to the dome!


Green is rocked!
Joe postures up and throws a couple of big shots that have Green in real trouble here! The ref calls for Green to improve his position which he doesn't do, so the referee has no choice but to end the fight due to the strikes!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:01 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Samoa Joe!
