PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Wanderlei Alves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joe Farrah (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Farrah has chosen Work In Progress as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the fighters buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Wanderlei Alves!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Joe Farrah!
The judges for this bout are Dillan Fox, Gregory Folan and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A head kick misses from Alves.
Farrah fails in his attempt to clinch.
Farrah thows a body kick. Alves tries to catch it but that hurt him.
Farrah doesn't manage to clinch there - Alves circles away.
Alves misses with a head kick.
Alves swinging wilding here.

Farrah drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Alves is looking to stand up but Farrah isn't so interested in that idea.
Farrah throwing strikes but missing.

Farrah decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Alves really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Alves rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Farrah moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Alves tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Farrah counters with a nice double leg into guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Farrah stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Alves swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Alves manages to escape and get back to his feet.

and Farrah counters with a single leg into guard. Alves didn't expect that.
Farrah looks gassed!
Farrah seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Farrah prevents Alves from getting back to his feet.

Alves is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Alves scores with a shot to the side of Farrah's head.
Farrah tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Alves just stands there and leans against the cage.
Farrah tries to land a knee to the head but Alves blocks with his arms.

Farrah wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Farrah is trying to break free.

Alves softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage.

Farrah drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Alves gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Farrah pulls guard.
Farrah is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Farrah pulls Alves in close to prevent any damage.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Farrah working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Alves has passed into half guard!

Farrah wants to get back to his feet.

Farrah has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, Alves escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by Alves!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joe Farrah dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


A jab-cross combination lands for Alves and sends Farrah crashing to the mat! Alves follows him down to the mat - Farrah regains half guard but he's not out of trouble yet!


Farrah is rocked!

Alves escapes and gets back to his feet.
Farrah is still on wobbly legs! Can Alves finish him?
Alves tries to clinch but Farrah moves away

and Farrah counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Farrah seems to have recovered his senses.
Alves connects with a knee to the head.
Alves prevents a takedown attempt there.
Alves lands a left hand that snaps the head of Farrah backwards.
Alves tries a knee to the head but Farrah blocks it.
Alves lands a right hand that snaps the head of Farrah backwards.
Alves unloads a knee to the mid-section. Farrah lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.

Farrah blocks a punch to the side of the head.

Farrah breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Farrah tries a head kick but it misses.
Alves tries to close the distance and clinch but Farrah swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Farrah instigates a clinch.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Farrah tries a body shot but Alves blocks it.
Alves misses with a knee strike.

Farrah is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Alves can't fight it off and eventually Farrah manages to take the fight to the floor. Alves looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Joe Farrah has got the better of the ground game so far.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Farrah is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Alves keeping moving, preventing Farrah from controlling successfully.
Alves wants to stand up but Farrah is controlling him.
Farrah is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Farrah lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Farrah tries to free his leg and advance position but Alves is retaining full guard.
Alves has a closed guard, preventing Farrah from standing up.
Farrah trying to control but Alves is working from the bottom.
Alves wants to sweep here but Farrah controlling him for the moment.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Alves tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Farrah counters with a head kick.
Alves misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Farrah doesn't manage to clinch there - Alves circles away.

Farrah gets the takedown into side control.
Alves is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Farrah is controlling him well.

Farrah thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Farrah tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Farrah has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Farrah sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Alves is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

Farrah wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Alves, who protects the arm well.

Farrah is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Alves is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Farrah is looking to take a break and control but Alves is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Alves avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Farrah.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Farrah fails with a takedown attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Joe Farrah will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Farrah has had enough of the clinch but Alves keeps him there for the moment.

Farrah wants the takedown. Alves is fighting it off but Farrah persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Alves's guard against the cage.

Farrah decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

and Farrah counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Alves is looking to control Farrah's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Alves avoid being mounted?

Alves pushes Farrah off looking to stand but Farrah dives back in and keeps control.

Alves is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Farrah's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Farrah's back!

Farrah shoots in for a takedown but Alves shows good takedown defense.

Wanderlei Alves has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Farrah works over Alves with some ground and pound from guard.
Alves is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Farrah is controlling him.
Farrah trying to control the position from guard on top but Alves is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Alves wants to stand up but Farrah is controlling him.
Alves is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Farrah pushes Alves off and gets back to his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Joe Farrah comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Farrah winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
