PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Simppa Koivu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Max Stuber (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Koivu might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Invincible Adelitas Way. Simppa Koivu has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Simppa Koivu!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Max Stuber!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, Reed Andrews and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Stuber shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Stuber showed some decent athleticism there.
Koivu is looking to improve his position.
Stuber is taking a breather. Koivu says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Koivu tries to get to full guard but Stuber has control of the leg.
Stuber is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Koivu trying to control but Stuber postures up.
Koivu is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Stuber is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Stuber wants to free his trapped foot but Koivu is holding on for dear life with his legs.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Stuber avoids a punch combination nicely.
Koivu shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Stuber counters with a shoot takedown. Koivu fights it but they end up in guard.
Koivu has his hands on Stuber's head, controlling the position.
Stuber slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Koivu has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Stuber is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Koivu.
Koivu tries to bench press Stuber off him but Stuber keeps the position.
Koivu is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Stuber is one step ahead and moves to full mount!
Koivu is trying to escape the mount.

Stuber avoids the attempt from Koivu to control.
Stuber can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Koivu is looking to escape.
Koivu keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Stuber content just to control the position here.
Koivu is desperately trying to improve his position but Stuber has a good base and remains in mount.
Koivu is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Koivu slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Koivu keeps control of the position for the meantime.

and Koivu counters with a nice double leg into side control. Stuber won't be happy with that.

Koivu tries to control but Stuber wriggling away.

Koivu's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Koivu tries to control but Stuber wriggling away.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Simppa Koivu just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Koivu controls Stuber momentarily but Stuber frees himself.
Koivu wants to sweep but no luck.
Koivu wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Stuber is now in half guard.
Stuber is keen to just control but Koivu is a slippery customer.

Koivu wants to control but Stuber is keeping busy.

Stuber is breathing heavily.
Koivu pulls Stuber in close to prevent any damage.
Koivu looking for a sweep. Not yet Koivu, not yet.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Koivu has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Stuber is working away from the top position though.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Koivu feints and as Stuber raises his hands in defense, Koivu changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Koivu gets the takedown into side control.
Koivu tries to advance to mount but Stuber instead regains half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Koivu in particular looking to stall.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Stuber is trying to stick to Koivu's back but Koivu is turning into Stuber. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Stuber's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Koivu.

Max Stuber comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Stuber has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
