Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
12 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, John Plank! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
20 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Daniel Maia! The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Maia darts in and clinches Plank up against the cage. Still in the clinch, Plank scores with a nice short uppercut. Maia tries to pull guard but Plank holds him up against the cage and eventually Maia drops back down to his feet.
Plank throws a punch but it's blocked by Maia. Maia jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Plank walks away with a smile on his face. Maia gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. The fight stays on the outside here - Plank looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Maia on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those. Plank fails with an attempt to clinch.
Maia throws a jab but it's blocked by Plank. Plank takes the fight into the clinch. Plank misses with a shot to the kidneys.
That's one minute gone in the round. Plank tries a knee to the head but Maia blocks it.

Plank is pressed up against the cage. Maia has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Plank down to the mat. Plank avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance. John Plank has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Daniel Maia. Maia looks for a takedown but Plank sprawls well. Maia misses with an uppercut. Plank goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo. Maia keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Plank. Plank checks a leg kick nicely. A looping hook to the body misses from Maia. Plank does a little dance to reset his feet. Maia throws a jab but it's blocked by Plank. Plank fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Maia misses with a wild body shot. Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Plank. Maia shrugs it off though. Maia closes the distance and clinches. A nice glancing elbow lands by Plank. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Maia blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning. Maia can't break the clinch.
Maia gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground. Maia postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. That's three minutes gone in the round. Maia throws a strike but Plank rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Maia has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Maia is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Maia had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Plank defends it easily. Maia manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Plank manages to get himself to full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Maia passes easily into side control. Nice work. Maia wants to control for a moment but Plank uses the opportunity to move back to half guard. Plank holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now. Plank flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Maia sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Plank defending well though. Maia frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Maia can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Plank is looking to escape. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Daniel Maia will probably get the nod. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Maia blocks a head kick by Plank.

and Maia counters with a nice uppercut. A punch combination from Maia misses. Plank throws a sloppy body shot
and Maia counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Plank! Maia controlling from mount. Plank regains half guard. Plank regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Maia.
That's one minute gone in the round. Plank throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Maia wants to control from the top but Plank keeps moving. Plank pulls Maia in close to his closed guard and prevents Maia from doing any damage or advancing position. Maia postures up.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Maia trying to control but Plank is working from the bottom. Maia is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
OK we're going to have a standup here. Daniel Maia hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Maia takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away. The fight stays on the outside here - Plank looks like he's thinking about clinching though. A left lands for Plank. Plank keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Maia wants to land a leg kick but Plank is out of range. Maia ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Maia looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. John Plank is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Maia avoids the body shot from Plank.
Maia throws the left hand but Plank avoids the punch easily. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Maia is defended easily by Plank. Maia takes a swing at Plank's ribcage but misses. Maia misses with a straight left. Plank with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Maia fails with a takedown attempt. John Plank has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Daniel Maia. Maia throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
That's four minutes gone in the round. An inside leg kick lands from Plank. Plank misses with a low kick.
Plank smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button. Plank fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Maia is out of range. Plank throws a nice outside leg kick. Plank pulls out of a head kick attempt.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Nice takedown defense from Plank. No joy for Maia on that attempt. John Plank is winning the standup battle so far. Plank leaves Maia with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Plank tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Maia manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close second round but Daniel Maia will probably get the nod - 10:9. That's time! Plank's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!
Maia throws a lazy right hand but Plank sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Plank bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick. Plank gets in close and instigates a clinch. Maia on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Plank gets through Maia's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head. Maia is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath. Maia avoids a wild elbow strike from Plank. Plank swings wildly with an uppercut but Maia uses good head movement to avoid it. Maia ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Maia no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard. Plank wants to pass the guard but Maia is keeping the position. Plank has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Plank ducks under a wild hook from Maia. Maia throws a right and a left that both miss. Maia has a takedown stuffed. Plank looks to clinch and Maia counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Plank throws a low kick but Maia avoids it. Maia moves forwards but Plank connects with a nice, crisp jab.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Plank lands a nice looking body shot.
Maia avoids a lazy jab quite easily. Donk. Maia catches Plank right on the button with a cross. Plank tries to sprawl but Maia drives through with a takedown into half guard. Plank trying to keep hold of his opponent's head but Maia manages to pass to mount!

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Maia wants to control the pace but Plank is squirming around nicely. Plank avoids a series of strikes thrown by Maia.

Plank wants to hold on but Maia pushes him away. Daniel Maia is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Maia blocks Plank's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
And that's the end of the fight! Daniel Maia comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. I've got Maia winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
