The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Markakis takes a kick to the body and keeps moving.
Markakis tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Aoki paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Aoki scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Markakis is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Aoki pulls his head out easily.

Aoki lands a big elbow from half guard. That looks like it's hurt Markakis quite badly. Markakis pulls Aoki in close trying to recover. Aoki postures up and lands two really hard shots that put Markakis on queer street! The ref takes a look and decides to call an end to the fight! Possibly an early stoppage but Markakis doesn't seem to be complaining too much.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:02 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Masakazu Aoki!
Masakazu Aoki took to the mic after the fight and begged the organizational hierarchy for a shot at the title.
