And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Darius Parker!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Steve Smith and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Funakoshi swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Parker counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Parker attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Gichin Funakoshi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Funakoshi wants to clinch.

Parker gets tackled into the cage by Funakoshi. Funakoshi maintains the clinch.
Parker lands an uppercut.

Funakoshi lands a takedown into guard.
Parker wants to sweep here but Funakoshi controlling him for the moment.
Funakoshi makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Funakoshi is fighting to break Parker's control of his arms but Parker is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Funakoshi accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Funakoshi won't allow Parker to sweep him here.

Funakoshi drops back, looking for a kneebar! Parker looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Parker looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Parker!
Funakoshi is looking to regain half guard here but Parker keeps moving and retains side control.

Funakoshi tries to bench press Parker off him but Parker keeps the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Parker in side control, just content to control the action for now.
Funakoshi tries to buck Parker off but Parker is having none of it.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Funakoshi can't do much from the bottom here.
The referee asks Parker politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Parker prefers to stall for the moment though.
Funakoshi manages to work his way to half guard, despite Parker's best efforts.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Parker fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Funakoshi throws a body punch but Parker moves out of range.
Funakoshi throws a left and a right that both miss
and Parker counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Darius Parker is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Parker throws a leg kick that misses.
Parker cracks the inside of Funakoshi's front leg.

Parker tries to keep at a distance but Funakoshi has taken the fight into the clinch.
Parker is leaning against Funakoshi and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.
Funakoshi is breathing heavily.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Parker breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
No joy there for Funakoshi, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
A punch combination from Funakoshi misses.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Funakoshi misses with a double jab
and Parker makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Funakoshi really felt that one!

Oooooh!!! Parker has knocked Funakoshi down with a huge combo! Parker steps away and waves a wobbly Funakoshi back to his feet! This one might not go much longer!


Funakoshi is rocked!


It looks like Gichin Funakoshi has been cut.
Parker pounces like a tiger and cracks Funakoshi with a vicious hook! Funakoshi is down but not out! Parker follows up with more strikes forcing the ref to jump in and stop it!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:23 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Darius Parker!
Darius Parker is the new lightweight champion!
