Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Chael Sonnen! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Maxim Selov! The judges for this bout are Fedor Mirinova, Konstantin Menshow and Sergei Dronov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Selov misses with a takedown attempt - Sonnen sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Sonnen pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Selov back to the cage. Sonnen follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver. Selov throws a series of punches but Sonnen moves out of range. Selov throws a combination that misses and Sonnen counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. Selov looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Selov looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Sonnen avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

That's one minute gone in the round. Sonnen is looking to work some ground and pound but Selov has wrist control. Sonnen has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Sonnen stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Selov swivels though and keeps the full guard. Selov is looking for a triangle but Sonnen pushes his legs off easily.
Sonnen wants to stand and escape but instead Selov has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard. Sonnen is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Sonnen pulls Selov in close to his closed guard and prevents Selov from doing any damage or advancing position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sonnen looking to hit a scissor sweep but Selov is one step ahead there. Selov passes Sonnen's left leg - he's now in half guard. Selov wants to lay and pray for a moment but Sonnen keeps working. Selov tries to stand but his arm is trapped. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Sonnen won't allow Selov to pass to mount. Selov works his way into side control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. An elbow from Selov crashes against the mat.
Sonnen tries to bench press Selov off him but Selov keeps the position. The referee asks Selov politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Selov prefers to stall for the moment though. Sonnen is not content to let Selov control the position. Selov decides to stand back up. Selov fails to land the takedown. Selov looks gassed! Sonnen shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Sonnen is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sonnen is looking to advance position but Selov won't allow it. Sonnen thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Selov's head. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Sonnen tries to pass to full mount but Selov defends it. Selov manages to get to full guard.

Sonnen fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Selov sprawls well initially but Sonnen persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Selov blocking the ground and pound attempt from Sonnen. Sonnen is looking to stall here but Selov recovers full guard. Selov is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Sonnen is aware though and is defending well. Sonnen throws a strike but Selov rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Selov lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Selov wanted to stand there but Sonnen had control of the position. Sonnen is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Selov stands and throws Sonnen's legs to the side, diving into side control. Sonnen tries to improve position but can't. Sonnen can't do much from the bottom here. Selov working the ground and pound but Sonnen is defending the strikes.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Selov scores with a couple of short elbows. Selov in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows. Sonnen is looking for a sweep. Sonnen on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Sonnen tries to get out of the position. Selov lands an elbow. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Selov throws a strike aimed at the side of Sonnen's head but Sonnen avoids it well. Sonnen tries to buck Selov off but Selov is having none of it. Selov is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Sonnen knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Sonnen is trying to control Selov's posture but Selov avoids it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sonnen is looking for a sweep. Sonnen taking a bit of punishment here - Selov scoring with strikes. Sonnen is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Selov wants to lay and pray for a moment but Sonnen keeps working. Selov landing a few strikes. Selov sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Sonnen is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Selov wants to lay and pray for a moment but Sonnen keeps working. Sonnen tries to bench press Selov off him but Selov keeps the position. Selov wants to stand but Sonnen has his arm trapped. Selov tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Selov is breathing heavily. Selov working away. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Maxim Selov showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!
Selov walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush. Selov shoots in looking for a takedown. Sonnen tries to sprawl out of it but Selov keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Sonnen manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Sonnen shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Sonnen trying to mount his opponent but Selov defends it. Sonnen trying to advance position but Selov counters by regaining guard. Selov escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Sonnen gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Selov can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Sonnen controls the pace. Selov has a closed guard, preventing Sonnen from standing up. Sonnen wants to control from the top but Selov keeps moving.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sonnen is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Sonnen stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Selov swivels though and keeps the full guard. Chael Sonnen has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
We're going to have a standup here because Chael Sonnen wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Sonnen feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Sonnen pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Selov is keeping the position for now. Selov is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Sonnen is aware though and is defending well. Selov takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Sonnen works his foot free and advances to mount. Sonnen looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Sonnen controlling from the full mount. Sonnen seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Selov for as long as he can get away with.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sonnen trying to control but he's not successful this time. Sonnen controlling his opponent. Sonnen has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Selov's face.
Maxim Selov is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Sonnen scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Selov?
