Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Vlad Lepdev! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rocki Balboa! The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Vladimir Khabensky and Valeri Chadov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Lepdev avoids a punch combination nicely.
Lepdev lands a jab to the head.
It looks like Rocki Balboa has been cut. Lepdev throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Balboa counters with a single leg into guard. Lepdev didn't expect that. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Balboa trying to control but Lepdev is working from the bottom. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Balboa looking to sit in guard and control but Lepdev gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Lepdev wants to stand but Balboa has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Balboa working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lepdev doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lepdev manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Balboa isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Lepdev stacks Balboa on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Lepdev! Balboa is trying to control Lepdev's posture but Lepdev avoids it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Balboa gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. Balboa avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Lepdev. Lepdev tries to stand but his arm is trapped. Lepdev decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up. Lepdev doesn't manage to clinch there - Balboa circles away.
Vlad Lepdev seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Lepdev lands with a good body shot. Lepdev tries to clinch but Balboa is having none of it. Lepdev drives through and clinches with Balboa against the cage.
Lepdev lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Balboa backwards. Good body shot from Lepdev.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Lepdev escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
A telegraphed right hand from Lepdev misses the target.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Balboa pushing out the jab but it's not landing. Both fighters circling a little - Lepdev finishes the exchange with a kick to the body. Balboa looks gassed! Balboa takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Lepdev lands a left and a right that send Balboa crashing to the mat, dazed. Lepdev thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!
Balboa is rocked! Balboa glances at the clock... BAM! Lepdev nails him with a big right hand! A momentary lapse in concentration sends Balboa crashing to the mat! The referee steps in and this one is over! Damn, Balboa is out of it, he thinks the ref is his opponent!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:22 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Vlad Lepdev!
