PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Dominick Mitchell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jeff Jefferson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mitchell has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Dominick Mitchell has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dominick Mitchell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jeff Jefferson!
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Eddie Farnsworth and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mitchell pushes Jefferson up against the cage in a clinch.

Jefferson jumps into guard, dragging Mitchell to the mat.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Jefferson keeping full guard, as Mitchell tries to pass.
Mitchell is breathing heavily.
Mitchell trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Jefferson has his feet on Mitchell's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Jefferson fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Mitchell clinches up against the cage.

Jefferson goes for a takedown in the clinch but Mitchell prevents it.
Mitchell has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Jefferson avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Jeff Jefferson hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Mitchell throws a sloppy head kick and Jefferson moves out of range easily.
Jefferson shoots in looking for a takedown. Mitchell tries to sprawl out of it but Jefferson keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Mitchell manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Jefferson tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Mitchell swivels and escapes.

Mitchell has closed the distance and engaged Jefferson in a clinch.

Jefferson jumps guard but Mitchell stands there with Jefferson around his waist. Jefferson gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Jefferson fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Jefferson has Mitchell pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Mitchell manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Jefferson drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Jefferson tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Mitchell smiles and moves away.
Dominick Mitchell seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Mitchell looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Jefferson is fending him off so far but Mitchell persists. Nope, Jefferson circles away and we're back to standing.

That was a close round but I would say that Dominick Mitchell will probably get the nod.
That's time! Mitchell's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Dominick Mitchell has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Jefferson changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Mitchell tries to avoid it but Jefferson manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Mitchell to the ground. Mitchell escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Jefferson fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Mitchell rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Jefferson moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Mitchell stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Jefferson swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Jefferson shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Mitchell but Mitchell pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Mitchell shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Jefferson defends it nicely.
Jefferson throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Mitchell's waist but Mitchell gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Jefferson off to one side.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Mitchell tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Jefferson swivels and escapes.
Mitchell blocks the body kick.

Jefferson tries to keep at a distance but Mitchell has taken the fight into the clinch.
Mitchell can't get the takedown.
Jefferson tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Mitchell smiles and moves away.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dominick Mitchell dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Mitchell is defended easily by Jefferson.

Jefferson drives through with a takedown into Mitchell's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Mitchell is not content to let Jefferson control the position.
Jefferson might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Mitchell kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Jefferson is working for an americana but Mitchell has been sneaky and has managed to get back to half guard, whilst Jefferson was thinking about the submission.
Mitchell thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Mitchell drops back, looking for a kneebar! Jefferson looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Jefferson looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Jefferson!
Mitchell wants to control but Jefferson postures up.
Jefferson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Mitchell keeps working.

Jefferson swings around for an armbar but Mitchell sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Jefferson's guard.
Mitchell is stalling in the full guard.
Mitchell's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Dominick Mitchell wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Mitchell rushes Jefferson and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Mitchell stops a takedown attempt from Jefferson.

Mitchell ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Mitchell no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Mitchell stands up and we're back to a striking position.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Dominick Mitchell.
Well Mitchell has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
