PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Sufjan Stevens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Daizu Mitsusada (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mitsusada has chosen A-Punk as his entrance music. Daizu Mitsusada will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sufjan Stevens!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Daizu Mitsusada!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Russell Pearce and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Stevens pushes Mitsusada up against the cage in a clinch.

Stevens wants the takedown. Mitsusada is fighting it off but Stevens persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Mitsusada's guard against the cage.

Stevens is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Stevens seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Mitsusada has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Stevens is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Mitsusada.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mitsusada tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Stevens wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Stevens is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Mitsusada has escaped the position, nice work there.
Mitsusada tries to bench press Stevens off him but Stevens keeps the position.

Stevens takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Stevens can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Mitsusada is looking to escape.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Mitsusada bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Mitsusada postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Stevens shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Stevens was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Mitsusada wants to hold on but Stevens pushes him away.
Mitsusada wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Stevens.

Mitsusada is looking to improve his position but Stevens isn't that keen on the idea.

Stevens goes for an armbar but Mitsusada turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Mitsusada.
Stevens is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Mitsusada pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Mitsusada misses with a wild combination.

Stevens has Mitsusada up against the cage in a clinch.

Stevens throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Mitsusada blocks it with crossed arms.

Mitsusada avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Stevens.

Sufjan Stevens dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Stevens.

Stevens scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Stevens takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Mitsusada trying to get back to full guard but Stevens takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount!
Mitsusada is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Mitsusada wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
Stevens is looking to control Mitsusada but Mitsusada is wriggling around and keeping busy.
Stevens cracks Mitsusada with a big shot to body and one to the head - really punishing Mitsusada from the back mount here, looking to soften him up.

Mitsusada avoids the strikes from Stevens.

Stevens has his opponent trapped and is landing shots. Not a good position for Mitsusada.

Stevens slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.

Mitsusada is taking damage to the body and head.

Stevens is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Mitsusada knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Mitsusada for a finish.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Mitsusada might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Stevens kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Mitsusada manages to reverse the position and now he's in Stevens's guard. Nice work there by Mitsusada.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

and Stevens counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Stevens keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Mitsusada's head.
Mitsusada is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Mitsusada is tying to control. Stevens wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Stevens's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Mitsusada isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Stevens stacks Mitsusada on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Stevens!

Well Stevens has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
