PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Johnny Severn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Monson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Johnny Severn has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Johnny Severn seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Johnny Severn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Frank Monson!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Gregory Folan and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Severn enables Monson to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Severn manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Monson is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Frank Monson hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Severn throws a sloppy head kick and Monson moves out of range easily.
Monson circles away from the clinch attempt.

Monson drives through with a takedown into Severn's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Monson controlling from the top position.
Monson throws a strike but Severn rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Monson working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Severn.
Severn looking to sit in guard and control but Monson gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Monson is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Severn had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Monson defends it easily.
Severn can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Monson controls the pace.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Frank Monson wasn't active enough on the ground.
Severn will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Severn has a takedown stuffed.
Severn is breathing heavily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Monson gets a double leg takedown into Severn's guard.
Monson passes Severn's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Monson stalling.
Severn tries to roll over but Monson keeps him under control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Frank Monson dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

and Monson counters with a shoot takedown. Severn fights it but they end up in guard.
Monson slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Severn looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Monson passes into half guard.
Frank Monson has got the better of the ground game so far.
Severn blocking the ground and pound attempt from Monson.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Still in half guard, Monson seems content to control.
Monson wants to pass to mount but Severn is defending the position.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Frank Monson was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Severn closes the distance looking to clinch

and Monson counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Monson.

Monson controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Frank Monson has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Severn throws a sloppy head kick and Monson moves out of range easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Monson throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Severn was covering up waiting for the punch and Monson finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Severn has his foot on Monson's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Monson works his way back into a safe position though.
Monson slips nicely into half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Frank Monson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!



Monson looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Severn!
Severn is trying to escape the mount.
Monson controlling from mount.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Monson lands a heavy elbow.
Frank Monson is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Monson content just to control the position here.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Frank Monson was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Severn fails with a takedown attempt.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Monson.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Monson in side control, just content to control the action for now.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Frank Monson comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Monson has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
