PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Stevie Reyes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Junior Johns (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Reyes comes to the cage accompanied by All the Above. Johns has chosen Welcome to the jungle as his entrance music. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Stevie Reyes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Junior Johns!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, John Mangel and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Reyes pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Johns wants to clinch up but Reyes keeps it at a distance.
Johns is looking to clinch but Reyes is avoiding it.
Johns wants to clinch.
A looping hook to the body misses from Reyes. Johns does a little dance to reset his feet.
Reyes throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Johns is defended easily by Reyes.
Reyes digs a good hook to Johns's body.
Johns tries to clinch up
and Reyes counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Johns with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Reyes to score with a decent uppercut.

Johns wants to work for an arm triangle but Reyes is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Reyes on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Reyes tries to get out of the position.

Johns thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Reyes's head.

Johns looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Reyes knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Johns on the ground.
Johns is nestled in close to Reyes, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Johns looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Reyes with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Johns throws a strike but Reyes avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Reyes is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Johns is controlling him.

Johns sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Reyes's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Johns is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Johns moves into full mount! Reyes won't be happy about that!
BOOM! Johns connects with a massive shot to the dome!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Reyes in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.

Reyes is desperately trying to improve his position but Johns has a good base and remains in mount.

Reyes throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Johns.
Johns tries to close the distance and clinch but Reyes swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

The fight stays on the outside here - Johns looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Reyes fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Johns manages to avoid it.

Johns shoots in looking for a takedown. Reyes tries to sprawl out of it but Johns keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Reyes manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Reyes shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Johns eats them both and turns towards Reyes to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.

Reyes jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Johns tries to clinch up but Reyes circles away and keeps his distance.
Reyes fails to land with a series of punches.
Johns pulls out of a head kick attempt.

and Reyes counters with a left and a right that stings Johns.
Reyes throws a series of punches but Johns avoids them all with ease.
Reyes's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Reyes duly obliges.
Reyes comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Reyes will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Johns tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Reyes manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Johns needs to keep his hands up - Reyes had a free shot at his head there.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Reyes swats away the attempt to clinch by Johns.
Reyes ducks under a wild hook from Johns.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Junior Johns will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Johns tries for a takedown but Reyes sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Reyes changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Reyes moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Reyes lands a nice hook to Johns's body. Johns takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Reyes bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Johns's head.
Reyes throws a shot to the body.
Johns fails with a takedown attempt.
Johns pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Johns tries to clinch but Reyes moves out of range.
Reyes circles away from the clinch attempt.
Johns wants to clinch up but Reyes keeps it at a distance.
Reyes lunges at Johns with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Johns's hand.

Reyes misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Johns fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Stevie Reyes has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Junior Johns.

Johns closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Johns tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Johns struggles to land a body shot inside as Reyes controls his hands.
Johns misses with a body punch.

Johns has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Reyes uses from the top position.

Reyes is posturing up here but Johns has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Reyes tries to roll out but it's too tight and Reyes has to tap! Slick submission there by Johns!
