Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Todd Nieds! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
11 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Josh Howell! The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Summer Carpenter and Winston Howard.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Howell looks to land a combination but Nieds avoids it well. Howell throws a leg kick but Nieds sees it coming and checks it nicely. Nieds takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
It looks like Josh Howell has been cut. Nieds missing with a left hand there. Howell was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Howell moves out of range as Nieds strikes. Howell lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Nieds circles away quickly and effectively. Howell fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Nieds manages to avoid it. Howell takes one to the chin there. Nieds tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Howell was well out of range. Poor timing from Nieds. Howell misses with a low kick.
Howell throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Howell lands a nice shot to the body.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Left hook, right uppercut from Nieds.
That's one minute gone in the round. Good shot there by Nieds. Nieds drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles. A leg kick checked by Nieds. Howell on the wrong end of a nice jab. Howell misses with a low kick as Nieds jumps back. Nieds moves into range and connects with a jab. Nice shot lands for Nieds.
That has opened up Josh Howell's cut even more. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Nieds takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Nice cross by Nieds. Nieds throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Howell sees it coming and avoids it easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Howell has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Nieds. Howell misses with a head kick.
Nieds's corner calls for a 1-2. Nieds obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range. Nieds misses with a hook. A good leg kick by Nieds. Nieds lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head. Howell takes one on the button. A leg kick checked by Howell. Nieds cracks Howell with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
The cut above Josh Howell's eye is starting to cause him problems now. Nieds is really peppering his opponent's head with punches. Nieds misses with a hook. Nieds fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Howell misses with a hook. Nieds scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Nieds trying to control the action but Howell is working from the bottom. Nieds taking a break here but Howell is having none of it and regains half guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Nieds controlling the pace.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Nieds seems to be working for a kimura but Howell defends the submission attempt. Nieds is stalling here. Howell is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Nieds seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Howell has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Howell wants to lay and pray for a moment but Nieds keeps working. Howell is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Nieds is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Todd Nieds dominated that round. The cut man is working on Josh Howell's cut. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Nieds throws a jab but it's blocked by Howell. Howell thows a body shot but no joy. Nieds avoids the head kick by Howell.
Nieds misses with a hook
and Howell counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Howell uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Nieds. Howell throws a hook but Nieds avoids it easily. Nieds throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
That's one minute gone in the round. Nieds connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son. Howell lands with an overhand left. Howell misses with the combination.
Howell takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness. A slow jab from Nieds misses its intended target. A nice combination there by Howell.
Nieds misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Nieds with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Howell to score with a decent uppercut. This has been an exciting period of action! Nieds misses with an uppercut. Nieds missing with a left hand there. Howell was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Nieds throws a lazy uppercut
and Howell counters with a nice uppercut. Todd Nieds is winning the standup battle so far. Howell scores with a decent looking hook. Howell ducks under a wild hook from Nieds. Howell throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean. Nieds checks the leg kick. Nieds fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Nieds tests Howell's chin there with a solid looking shot. Howell uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Nieds.
A combination from Nieds does no damage.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nieds misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Howell lands a slapping body shot.
Howell throws a leg kick but Nieds sees it coming and moves out of range. Nieds takes one to the chin there. Howell throws a head kick that misses. Nieds throws a hook but Howell avoids it easily. Howell displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Nieds. Nieds thows a body shot but no joy.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Howell misses with a leg kick and Nieds counters with a nice uppercut. Howell has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight. Nieds shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Howell counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Nieds thinking. Howell throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Nieds looks to score with a jab to the body but Howell is just out of range. Howell cracks a nice hook into Nieds's ribs. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Nieds scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Howell doesn't seem bothered though. Howell lands a slapping body shot.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Nieds throws a looping overhand right but Howell ducks down to avoid it. Howell scoring well with a low kick there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close second round but I would say that Todd Nieds will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Josh Howell's cut. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!
Howell tries to work over Nieds's front leg with a kick but Nieds checks it. Nieds takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor. Howell throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land. Howell slips a jab and a cross from Nieds.
Nieds shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down. Howell tries a head kick but it misses.
The fighters circle momentarily. Nieds darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch. Howell dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Howell cracks a nice hook into Nieds's ribs. Nieds fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Howell checks it well. Todd Nieds seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
That's one minute gone in the round. Howell throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Some wild striking there from Nieds.
Nieds lunges at Howell with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Howell's hand. Howell scores with a hook. Nieds cracks Howell with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage. Nieds misses with a hook. Howell ducked under it nicely. Nieds is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Nieds scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Howell doesn't seem bothered though. Todd Nieds is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Howell is looking to chop away at Nieds's legs. Howell takes one on the button.
Josh Howell's cut is absolute horrible now. This looks like something out of a horror film with blood covering both fighters. Howell misses with a jab to the body
and Nieds counters with a right hand to the body. Nieds listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut. Nieds lands with a right hand. Nieds avoids a punch combination nicely.
Howell takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. A good leg kick by Nieds.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Howell swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Howell misses with a hook. Howell on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those. Howell takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Howell misses with a wild body shot. Nieds connects with a solid leg kick. Nieds lands an overhand right. Nieds is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
The referee calls the doctor in to look at Josh Howell's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:04 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Cut). Todd Nieds!
