The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Black closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Germaine trying to get back to full guard but Black takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount!
Black lands a heavy elbow.

Black is working for a guillotine from mount but Germaine frees his head quite easily.

Black is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Germaine is surviving well by controlling Black's body position as best he can.

Germaine wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
Germaine tries to roll but Black sticks to his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Germaine defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Black's arms.

Germaine really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Black. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Germaine breaks Black's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Germaine must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Black utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Black is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Black uses his free foot to push down on Germaine's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Germaine.

Black has control of Germaine's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Germaine regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Black has hold of Germaine's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Germaine manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Black goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Germaine turns into him and now he's in Black's guard.

Black had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Germaine is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Black Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Germaine's back instead.
You can see the frustration on Germaine's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
