PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jesus Barreda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Luke Upton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Upton is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Shutterbug. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jesus Barreda!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Luke Upton!
The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Chad Campbell and John Roberts.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Upton throws a looping overhand right but Barreda ducks down to avoid it.
Sloppy strikes from Barreda. Those never looked like landing.
Barreda fails to land with a series of punches.
Barreda sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Upton swinging wildly here.
Barreda throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Barreda misses with a jab, cross combination.
Upton scores with a decent looking hook.
Upton goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Barreda tests Upton's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Nice body punch from Upton.
Upton takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Upton feints and then cracks Barreda's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Barreda down.
Barreda misses with a double jab.
Barreda takes a swing at Upton's ribcage but misses.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Upton shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Upton was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Upton thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Upton punching from mount but Barreda doing a good job of avoiding damage.
Barreda blocking the ground and pound.

Upton jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Barreda manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Upton working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
Upton landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.

Upton looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Upton is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Barreda is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Upton tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Upton has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
The strikes coming from Upton are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

Upton working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Upton is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Barreda knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Upton is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Barreda has escaped the position, nice work there.

Upton is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Barreda is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Upton throwing strikes but missing, from side control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Barreda is trying to control Upton's posture but Upton avoids it.
Upton passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Barreda!

Upton goes for an armbar but Barreda turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Barreda.

Barreda got a little sloppy there for a moment and Upton has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Barreda has managed to get both his arms back between Upton's legs - danger averted.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Barreda content to stall in guard here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Luke Upton dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Barreda misses with a series of wild punches.
Upton misses with a kick to the body.
Upton throws the left hand but Barreda avoids the punch easily.
Barreda ducks under a wild hook from Upton.
Upton throws a sloppy head kick and Barreda moves out of range easily.
Upton clobbers Barreda with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Barreda stuffs the takedown.
Upton avoids the body shot from Barreda.
Luke Upton seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Barreda looks to score with a jab to the body but Upton is just out of range.
Upton checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
The fighters circling - Barreda throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Barreda on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.

Barreda lands a left and a right that send Upton crashing to the mat, dazed. Barreda thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!


Upton is rocked!


It looks like Luke Upton has been cut.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Barreda circles away before darting back in with a big straight right hand. It connects beautifully and sends Upton tumbling to the canvas! He's out cold! Barreda wins by KO!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Jesus Barreda!
Jesus Barreda took some time post fight to say the following; 'I'd like to thank God.....and to my mom at home, I love you mom.'.
