Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Andy Johnson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Marvin Welch! The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Franklyn Lucas and John Roberts.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A shot to the liver by Johnson. Beautiful body shot. Welch lands a nice hook to Johnson's body. Johnson takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes. Johnson keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Welch. Welch misses with a wild combination.
Welch stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Johnson. Nice shot by Welch. Johnson uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Welch.
Johnson lands with a good body shot. Welch thuds a left hand into Johnson's body. Johnson shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Welch napping and manages to drive through into side control! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Johnson working the body and head with strikes. Johnson scores with a couple of short elbows.
That's one minute gone in the round. Johnson tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Johnson in side control, throwing shots but Welch defends. Johnson is chipping away with strikes.
Welch tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Johnson wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Johnson controlling the position from side mount. Johnson looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Welch is avoiding damage well.
Johnson has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Johnson throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage. Johnson landing strikes. Welch takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Welch dodges the ground and pound from Johnson. Welch managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Johnson.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Johnson looks up at the clock and then as Welch takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Johnson smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Johnson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Welch keeps working. Johnson creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots. Welch is still in real trouble! Can Johnson finish him? Johnson is working Welch over with some ground and pound from side control. A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet. Welch really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Johnson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Johnson is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Welch looks calm but he's in trouble here. Johnson gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Welch is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Johnson lets go of the hold and Welch can pop his arm back in it's socket.
