Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
15 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Brad Rood! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
14 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Wiley Abu! The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Robert Twigg and Cecil Peabody.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rood misses with a wild combination.
Abu misses with a jab, cross combination.
Rood misses with a straight right. No joy there for Rood, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Rood bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Abu's head. Rood misses with a body shot.
Rood throws a lazy uppercut
and Abu decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Rood's guard. Rood looking for a sweep. Not yet Rood, not yet. Abu is looking to advance position but Rood has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount! Rood lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rood landing strikes, looking to finish! Abu is bucking up trying to escape but Rood cracks him with another couple of good strikes. Rood with the ground and pound from mount. BOOM! Rood connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Abu gets back to half guard. Rood gets to his feet - back to striking we go! We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Rood tries to close the distance and clinch but Abu swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Abu shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Rood as he avoids it easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lazy left from Rood finds it's target. Abu looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Rood sizes up Abu with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle. Rood fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Abu on the side of the head. Abu throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Abu shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Rood sprawls well. Rood wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Abu gets slowly back to his feet. Brad Rood has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Wiley Abu. Abu fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Rood avoids it really well and circles away.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Rood misses with an uppercut. Rood looks to land a left hand but Abu moved out of range nicely. Rood misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Abu on the wrong end of a nice jab. Rood is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all. Rood misses with a hook. Abu misses with a takedown attempt and Rood counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Rood looks for the body kick but Abu saw that one coming. Rood has taken the fight to the clinch.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Rood makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut. Rood is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage. Rood swings away with an uppercut that misses.

and Abu counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. Rood keeping moving, preventing Abu from controlling successfully. Abu slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Abu tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Abu swings around for an armbar but Rood sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Abu's guard. Rood tries to free his leg and advance position but Abu is retaining full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rood controlling from the top position. Abu keeping moving, preventing Rood from controlling successfully. Abu wants to sweep here but Rood controlling him for the moment. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Rood tries to free his leg and advance position but Abu is retaining full guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Rood advances to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Abu trying to hold on to Rood's head to control him but Rood postures up.
Rood prevents Abu from improving his position. Rood is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Abu is just riding it out for now. Rood eventually gives up the hold. Rood is looking to advance position but Abu won't allow it.

That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Abu is in trouble now - Rood has advanced to mount! Rood with shots to the head and body - Abu looks very uncomfortable down there. Rood lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Rood lands a nice shot to the head. Rood takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Rood looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.

Brad Rood dominated that second round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!
Abu walks into a jab. Rood falls off balance throwing a combination
and Abu counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Abu is looking for a kimura but Rood is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Abu to get the leverage. Abu lands strikes from half guard. Abu is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Rood is defending against the submission attempts here by Abu.
Abu works his way into full mount! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Abu misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Rood missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Abu is not content to let Rood control the position. Rood is trying to work for a kimura but Abu is defending well.
Rood is looking to take a break and control but Abu is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nice strikes from Rood there. Rood looks to land a strike but Abu avoids it nicely and regains full guard. Rood slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. The ground and pound from Rood seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent. Rood wants to lay and pray for a moment but Abu keeps working. Rood working the head with strikes.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Rood creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Abu sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike. Abu is not content to let Rood control the position. Abu parries the strikes from Rood easily there. Rood is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Abu to escape.
Rood thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Rood landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
And that's the end of the fight! Brad Rood showed his dominance in that final round. Well Rood has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
