PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Frankie Cocozza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ippo Makunochi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Makunochi has chosen DMX - X Gon Give It To Ya as his entrance music. Ippo Makunochi told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Frankie Cocozza!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ippo Makunochi!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Elvis Blanc and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Makunochi closes this distance looking for a takedown but Cocozza circles away.
Cocozza misses with a hook
and Makunochi counters with a one-two to the body.
Makunochi changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Cocozza tries to avoid it but Makunochi manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Cocozza to the ground. Cocozza escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Makunochi shoots for a takedown but Cocozza saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Frankie Cocozza has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ippo Makunochi.
Makunochi uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Cocozza.
Frankie Cocozza seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Makunochi tries to score a power double leg takedown but Cocozza sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Makunochi somewhat.

Makunochi drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Cocozza gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Cocozza digs a right hand underneath Makunochi's ribcage. Makunochi let out a lung full of air as it connected.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Makunochi tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Cocozza smiles and moves away.

Cocozza drives through with a takedown into Makunochi's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Cocozza stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Makunochi swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Frankie Cocozza has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Cocozza pivots, looking for a leg kick but Makunochi is out of range and Cocozza settles back down.

Makunochi slips a jab and a cross from Cocozza.
Cocozza throws a head kick that misses.
Cocozza leaves Makunochi with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Cocozza throws a front kick aimed at Makunochi's knee but Makunochi avoids it well.
Cocozza will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
The fighters circling - Cocozza throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Cocozza tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Makunochi manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Makunochi steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Cocozza.
Makunochi changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Cocozza tries to avoid it but Makunochi manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Cocozza to the ground. Cocozza escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Cocozza fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Makunochi to the ground. Cocozza is now in Makunochi's guard.

Cocozza is looking to work some ground and pound but Makunochi has wrist control.

Makunochi loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Makunochi decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Cocozza, up you get!

Cocozza is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Makunochi can't fight it off and eventually Cocozza manages to take the fight to the floor. Makunochi looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Cocozza wants to get up but he can't break Makunochi's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Cocozza misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
And that�s the end of the round � the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Frankie Cocozza will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!
