Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Derek Roy! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Duncan Brookins! The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Timothy Bukovac and Don Winkell.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Roy darts in and clinches Brookins up against the cage. Roy pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Brookins shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Brookins prevents Roy from getting the reversal. Brookins throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Roy reaches up to try and control the position but Brookins seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Roy rolls and tries to escape and now Brookins has his back!
Roy prevents Brookins from getting a body triangle. I would not like to be Roy right now.
Roy trying to control the hands but Brookins breaks the grip. Brookins trying to control momentarily.
Brookins has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Roy has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
That's one minute gone in the round. Roy tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell! Roy wants to hold on but Brookins pushes him away. Brookins is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Roy has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Roy! Brookins is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Roy works his way to full guard. Good work. Roy is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Brookins defends well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Roy managing to control the position. Brookins missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Brookins tries to free his leg and advance position but Roy is retaining full guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Roy is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Brookins is aware though and is defending well. Brookins wants to pass the guard but Roy is keeping the position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Roy looking for a guillotine here but Brookins defends easily.
Roy seems keen to control Brookins's posture.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Roy has his foot on Brookins's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Brookins works his way back into a safe position though. Brookins stands up over his opponent, looking to dive in with a big punch. Here he comes, superman style! Oh, the punch misses and Roy has got him in a triangle choke for good measure! Oh no! Brookins manages to get his head free but now Roy has transitioned to an armbar! Brookins grimaces and is forced to tap! Beautiful Jiu Jitsu from Roy! I'd be surprised if that didn't end up as submission of the night!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:48 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Derek Roy! In his post fight interview, Derek Roy started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
