PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Robert Aata (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Piter De Vires (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Aata might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to If you Wanty Blood You Got It by AC/DC. Robert Aata has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Robert Aata!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Piter De Vires!
The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Eliza Hachem and Summer Carpenter.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
De Vires shoots for a takedown but Aata saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
De Vires tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Aata clinches up with De Vires and pushes him back against the cage.

Aata is trying to trip De Vires. He has hold of a leg but De Vires is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Aata persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

De Vires is trying to keep Aata in close.

De Vires has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Aata is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for De Vires.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Aata wants to stand but De Vires has his arm trapped.
De Vires sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
De Vires should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

De Vires manages to get to full guard.
De Vires tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Aata knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for De Vires on the ground.
De Vires has a closed guard, preventing Aata from standing up.
Aata tries to free his leg and advance position but De Vires is retaining full guard.

Aata gets to his feet - De Vires follows without any prompting.
Aata throws a head kick but De Vires moves out of range.
De Vires avoids the head kick by Aata.
Aata swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Aata lands a head kick. De Vires smiles back at him and beckons him forward.

and Aata counters with a head kick. That will keep De Vires thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!
De Vires wants to clinch.

Aata moves out of range of the body kick.
De Vires wants to clinch up but Aata keeps it at a distance.
Aata shoots in looking for a takedown but De Vires manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Aata's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
De Vires looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
A punch combination from De Vires misses.
Aata tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. De Vires manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

De Vires blocks a head kick by Aata.
Some wild striking there from De Vires.
The fight stays on the outside here - Aata looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
De Vires avoids the head kick by Aata.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Aata ducks down and throws a hook to the body but De Vires moves away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Robert Aata dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Aata tries to clinch but De Vires is having none of it.
Aata lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Aata lands with a kick to the temple. De Vires shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"

Aata closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. De Vires quickly recovers to half guard.
De Vires moves into full guard.
Aata throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
De Vires manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Aata manages to get himself to full guard.
De Vires postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Aata keeping moving, preventing De Vires from controlling successfully.
De Vires controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Aata preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
De Vires stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Aata swivels though and keeps the full guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as De Vires accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Aata has momentary wrist control but De Vires slips an elbow through the middle.
De Vires won't allow Aata to get back to his feet.

De Vires tries to free his leg and advance position but Aata is retaining full guard.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - De Vires has eaten all the pies!
De Vires is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Aata tries to close the distance and clinch but De Vires swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Aata pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Aata checks a leg kick nicely.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
De Vires throws a series of punches but Aata moves out of range.

Aata gets a clinch.

Aata manages to break the clinch.
Aata shoots in looking for a takedown. De Vires tries to sprawl out of it but Aata keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. De Vires manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
De Vires tries to clinch up but Aata circles away and keeps his distance.

De Vires shoots in and drives through. Aata sprawls well.
Aata throws a nice outside leg kick.
De Vires misses with a head kick.
De Vires looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

De Vires takes the fight into the clinch.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
De Vires changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Aata fights it off and pushes away nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Piter De Vires showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!



De Vires clinches.

Aata breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Aata decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Aata with the ground and pound but De Vires uses the opportunity to regain guard.
De Vires wants to sweep but no luck.
Aata throws an elbow that misses. De Vires uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Aata's guard. Nice move by De Vires!
Aata on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Aata tries to get out of the position.
De Vires working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Aata is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Piter De Vires has got the better of the ground game so far.
De Vires wants to control from the top but Aata keeps moving.
De Vires lands a couple of elbows.
De Vires lands a couple of decent looking shots.
De Vires is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Aata keeping full guard, as De Vires tries to pass.
De Vires pushes down on Aata's leg and manages to get into half guard.
De Vires stops Aata from getting back to his feet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Nice strikes from De Vires there.
De Vires drops an elbow to the side of Aata's head.
De Vires wants to take a breather but Aata is having none of it.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. De Vires connects with a nice short shot to Aata's temple.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

De Vires is trying for a kimura here. Aata looks like he's in a lot of pain... and he's tapping out! De Vires wins by kimura!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:45 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Piter De Vires!
