PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Lewis McLay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carlos Santiago (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Santiago's choice of entrance music: Get Em Up - Cypress Hill. Lewis McLay had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Lewis McLay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Carlos Santiago!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Winston Howard and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

McLay darts in and clinches Santiago up against the cage.
McLay keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Santiago's efforts to push away.
Santiago lands with a short head shot on the inside.
McLay wants a takedown but no success here.
McLay using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Santiago has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Santiago lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down McLay.
McLay tries to pull guard but Santiago holds him up against the cage and eventually McLay drops back down to his feet.
Santiago is trying to break the clinch but McLay has him pressed against the cage.
A shot in the inside from Santiago.
McLay tries for a takedown but Santiago manages to get underhooks.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lewis McLay. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Santiago pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Carlos Santiago seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Santiago connects with an inside leg kick.
McLay drops his hands momentarily and Santiago takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Santiago throws a combination but it was largely blocked by McLay.

Santiago drives through and clinches with McLay against the cage.
Santiago scores with a shoulder strike.
McLay is trying to drag Santiago to the mat but Santiago just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Santiago's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Santiago scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
McLay tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Santiago paws at him with a jab and circles away.
McLay on the wrong end of a nice hook.
Santiago throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent McLay stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
A shot to the liver by Santiago. Beautiful body shot.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
McLay takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

Santiago instigates a clinch.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Santiago gets underhooks to prevent McLay's takedown attempt.
Come on Santiago - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Santiago wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Santiago leaning his opponent against the cage.
Santiago lands an uppercut.
Santiago lands a nice uppercut.

A shot in the inside from Santiago.

Santiago's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
A nice inside leg kick there by Santiago. That's going to slow McLay down.
Santiago tests McLay's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Left hook, right uppercut from Santiago.
Santiago throws a solid leg kick but McLay takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Santiago.
Santiago throws a nice outside leg kick.
Santiago stuffs the takedown.
McLay fails with the takedown.
McLay takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.

Santiago throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Santiago throws a nice looking combination but McLay bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Santiago with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
McLay shoots in but no luck this time.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Santiago closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Santiago thuds his right hand into McLay's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Santiago throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
McLay shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Santiago but Santiago pushes him off and we're back to square one.
This is turning into a torrid day at the office for McLay. He's trying desperately to land a takedown but he's failing miserably and getting slapped silly on the feet to compound his misery.
Santiago swings and misses with a hook to the body.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Carlos Santiago dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


McLay on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Nice jab there from Santiago.
McLay fails with a takedown attempt.
Santiago works McLay's body with a nice hook.
McLay really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
A head kick by Santiago misses

and McLay counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Santiago has hold of McLay's hands but McLay slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
McLay trying to control the action but Santiago is working from the bottom.
McLay will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Santiago won't allow McLay to pass to mount.

McLay is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
McLay is keen to just control but Santiago is a slippery customer.

Santiago looks like he's trying to stand up.
McLay takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
McLay seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
McLay missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.

McLay is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Santiago doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time McLay.
McLay throws a strike but Santiago avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
McLay distracts Santiago with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
McLay working some strikes from top position.
McLay prevents Santiago from getting back to his feet.
Santiago working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from McLay.

McLay drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and McLay jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McLay content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
McLay stops Santiago from standing up.
Santiago is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Santiago is looking to stand up but McLay isn't so interested in that idea.

McLay drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and McLay jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Santiago wants to stand up but McLay is controlling him.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Santiago is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
McLay is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Santiago looking for a sweep. Not yet Santiago, not yet.

McLay drops back looking for a leg! Santiago is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Santiago manages to kick McLay off! McLay jumps back into Santiago's guard.
McLay throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Santiago works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Santiago working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from McLay.
McLay postures up in Santiago's guard and throws a big left but Santiago blocks it.
Lewis McLay overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
McLay is looking to work some ground and pound but Santiago has wrist control.
McLay wants to pass the guard but Santiago is keeping the position.

McLay drops back looking for a submission - "I'm sorry sir, but I'm gunna break your leg" says McLay as he cranks on the unfortunate limb! Santiago screams and taps out before any major damage is done! Don't mess with McLay! Nice submission victory there!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:35 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kneebar). Lewis McLay!
Lewis McLay spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
