Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Thiago Alves! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Diego Rua! The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Leandro Rodrigues and Felipe Paraventi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rua is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Alves looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this! Rua scores with a takedown into Alves's guard. Alves keeping moving, preventing Rua from controlling successfully. Rua might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Alves kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Rua engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Rua pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Alves is keeping the position for now.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Diego Rua was stalling too much, according to the referee. Rua darts in trying to clinch and Alves counters with a nice double leg into half guard. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Rua wants to get back to his feet. Alves is looking to take a break and control but Rua is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Rua is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Rua throws a head kick that half lands.

Alves fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Rua, pushing him back against the cage. Alves takes a knee to the side of the body. Rua lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Rua looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Rua lands a nice short elbow. Alves is looking for a sweep. Rua is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Rua is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound. Rua is pressing down on Alves's thigh, looking to free his foot. Alves is holding on for now. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Rua lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Rua working the head and body with strikes. Alves actively working from the bottom here. Rua stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being. Rua pushes Alves up against the cage in a clinch. Rua has Alves pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Rua pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Alves tumbling to the mat - Rua dives into Alves's guard. Rua stands up from Alves's guard - Rua perhaps looking for a knockout. Rua closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Rua working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Rua wants to stand but Alves has his arm trapped. Alves is not content to let Rua control the position. Rua works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Alves is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Rua lands a decent elbow from side control. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rua is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Alves pushes Rua up against the cage in a clinch. Alves is working for takedown but Rua is calmly controlling the position for now. A bit of stalling here from Rua.

Alves takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming. Rua tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Alves tries to keep at a distance but Rua has taken the fight into the clinch. Rua gets control of Alves's arms and successfully pulls guard. Rua will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Alves postures up.
Alves stops Rua from standing up. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rua pulls Alves in close to his closed guard and prevents Alves from doing any damage or advancing position. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Diego Rua wasn't active enough on the ground. Rua moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body. Rua rushes Alves and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Rua breaks from the clinch.
Rua tries to clinch up. Rua is looking to clinch. A left and a right from Rua both land. Nice combination. Alves shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Rua defends it nicely. Alves tries to keep at a distance but Rua has taken the fight into the clinch. Rua decides to pull guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Alves prevents Rua from getting back to his feet. Rua keeping full guard, as Alves tries to pass. Rua is controlling Alves's posture. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Alves postures up.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Alves is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Rua really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Alves. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
OK we're going to have a standup here. Diego Rua hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Rua closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Rua prevents Alves from improving his position. Alves looking for submissions from an awkward position here. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Rua is looking to advance position but Alves won't allow it. Rua tries to stand but can't do so whilst Alves controls his leg. Rua slows the pace down in half guard. Alves makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Alves. Rua must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Alves throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Rua jumps guard.
Alves drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Alves jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Alves working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Diego Rua showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.
Rua scores with the left hand. Alves knows he should have avoided that one. Rua gets a double leg takedown into Alves's guard. Rua keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Alves's head. Rua with a nice head shot there. Rua is looking to stand up but Alves won't let him. Rua chips away with some ground and pound. Alves keeping moving, preventing Rua from controlling successfully. Rua avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Alves had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Rua defends it easily. Alves keeping moving, preventing Rua from controlling successfully. Rua makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Rua scoring with some ground and pound.

Alves has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Rua can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Diego Rua has got the better of the ground game so far. Alves is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Rua defends well. Thiago Alves has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Rua working some strikes from top position. Alves has his foot on Rua's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Rua works his way back into a safe position though.

I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Rua is looking for a kimura but Alves is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Rua to get the leverage. And that's the end of the fight! Diego Rua comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. Well Rua has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
