Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Urijah Samuel! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, William Cruz! The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Dillan Fox and William Peck.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cruz keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Samuel slips a jab and a cross from Cruz.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Cruz. Cruz gets in close and instigates a clinch. Samuel has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Cruz is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. Samuel is trying to drag Cruz to the mat but Cruz just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Urijah Samuel. That's going to take a lot out of him. Come on Cruz - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Samuel has clasped his hands together around Cruz's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Cruz manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. OK we're going to have a standup here. William Cruz hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Cruz misses with a takedown attempt and Samuel counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Cruz's guard now. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Cruz preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Cruz tries to land a sweep but no joy.
