Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Donald Stewart! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
16 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Dj Nelson! The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Stewart fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Nelson to the ground. Stewart is now in Nelson's guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Nelson wants to stand and escape but Stewart is having none of it. Stewart throwing strikes from guard but Nelson blocks nicely. Nelson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Stewart postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Nelson has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. Nelson looking to hit a scissor sweep but Stewart is one step ahead there. Stewart trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Nelson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Nelson is pulling down on Stewart's head to control his posture. Stewart really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Dj Nelson. Stewart throws a low kick but Nelson moves out of range easily. Stewart darts in trying to clinch and Nelson counters with a two punch combo. Donald Stewart seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Stewart drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Stewart lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face. Stewart working the strikes but Nelson uses the opportunity to regain half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Stewart works his foot free and advances to mount. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Nelson bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done! Stewart is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Stewart looking to hit a scissor sweep but Nelson is one step ahead there. Stewart is looking for a triangle here but Nelson uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nelson in side control, just content to control the action for now. Stewart looks to move to half guard but instead Nelson has passed into mount! Damn! Nelson lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Nelson fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Nelson tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Nelson working Stewart over with strikes here. Nelson working from mount. He moves in close and looks like he might be going for an arm triangle... He's hopped off to the side and he's transitioned into an Anaconda choke. Stewart turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips Nelson off and cradles Stewart's limp body as Nelson celebrates with his corner.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:31 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Anaconda Choke). Dj Nelson!
