PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Johan Apanson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carlos Rivera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rivera has chosen Your Hand in Mine as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Carlos Rivera has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Johan Apanson's chin.

Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Johan Apanson!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Carlos Rivera!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Roosa Järviläinen and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A telegraphed right hand from Rivera misses the target.
Rivera looks to land a right hand but Apanson moved out of range.
Apanson throws a right hand that misses
and Rivera counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Rivera ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Apanson moves away.
Apanson throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Apanson checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
Rivera scores with a punch to the head.
Nice jab there from Rivera.
Apanson misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Rivera.
Rivera takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Rivera takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

A slow jab from Apanson misses its intended target.
Rivera takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Apanson throws a push kick but Rivera slaps the foot to one side.
An inside leg kick lands from Rivera.
Rivera blocks a low kick nicely.
Apanson slips under a jab.
Apanson misses the jab.
Apanson ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Rivera blocks a low kick nicely.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rivera stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Apanson.
Apanson moves out of range of the body kick.
Rivera wants to land a leg kick but Apanson is out of range.
Rivera throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Apanson gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Rivera counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Johan Apanson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Apanson cracks the inside of Rivera's front leg.
Apanson misses with a straight left.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Rivera moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

Apanson misses with a leg kick.
Apanson uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Rivera.
Rivera throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Apanson's waist but Apanson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Rivera off to one side.
Nice uppercut there from Rivera.
Rivera defending well as Apanson loads up on a big left hand.
Rivera moves out of range as Apanson strikes.
Rivera swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Apanson throws out a leg kick but Rivera moves out of range and Apanson only half commits.
Rivera misses with a head kick.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Apanson fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Rivera tried to score with a low kick but Apanson checks it.
Rivera closes the distance and clinches up with Apanson, looking for a takedown. Rivera pushes Apanson against the cage but Apanson circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Apanson lands with a thumping leg kick.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Apanson, as that shot connected.
Rivera uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Apanson.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rivera throws a front kick aimed at Apanson's knee but Apanson avoids it well.
Apanson feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Rivera's calf.
Apanson misses with an uppercut
and Rivera counters with a stiff right hand.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Johan Apanson will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Apanson moves out of range of the body kick from Rivera.
Apanson misses with a straight right.
Apanson swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Johan Apanson is winning the standup battle so far.
Rivera throws a shot from downtown. Apanson moves away and avoids it.
Apanson uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Rivera.
Apanson misses with a looping left.
Rivera staying out of range there.
Apanson throws a front kick aimed at Rivera's knee but Rivera avoids it well.
Apanson misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Apanson fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Rivera.

That's one minute gone in the round.
A good leg kick by Apanson.

Rivera tries to sprawl but Apanson drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Apanson uses his free foot to push down on Rivera's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Rivera.
Apanson throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Apanson wants to control the pace but Rivera is squirming around nicely.
Apanson scoring with strikes but Rivera is staying in there.
Rivera wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Apanson.
Rivera is trying desperately to improve position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Apanson looking to control but Rivera is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Apanson misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Apanson swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Rivera is now in Apanson's guard. A big mistake from Apanson there, giving up the dominant position!
Apanson keeping moving, preventing Rivera from controlling successfully.

Apanson has his foot on Rivera's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Rivera works his way back into a safe position though.
Rivera wants to pass the guard but Apanson is keeping the position.

Rivera is sitting in close to Apanson's body. Apanson has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Rivera is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Rivera is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Apanson.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:04 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Johan Apanson!
