Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Montgomery Nagendra! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Samir Oliva! The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Roosa Järviläinen and Arvi Lind.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nagendra fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Oliva avoids it really well and circles away. Oliva displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Nagendra throws out the jab. Oliva ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Oliva stuffs the takedown. Oliva defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Nagendra. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Montgomery Nagendra. That's going to take a lot out of him. Oliva tries a head kick but it misses.
Montgomery Nagendra seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Nagendra closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Oliva is looking to reverse the position. Oliva trying to remain calm as Nagendra controls from the top position. Nagendra creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots. Oliva taking punishment in the form of punches.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Nagendra landing a few strikes. Nagendra connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Oliva some visible discomfort.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Oliva can do anything to dispel that myth. Nagendra misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
That's one minute gone in the round. Nagendra lands a decent elbow from side control. Nagendra tries to score with some ground and pound. Oliva controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage. Sloppy strikes there by Nagendra. Nagendra wants to lay and pray for a moment but Oliva keeps working. Nagendra is trying to get an arm triangle but Oliva is defending well. Oliva really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Nagendra. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. The strikes coming from Nagendra are missing the target in this wave of attacks. Nagendra has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Nagendra lands a nice forearm strike. Nagendra working the head with strikes. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Nagendra is staying tight to Oliva's torso, preventing him from escaping.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Nagendra throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage. Nagendra lands a nice forearm strike. Nagendra is putting a hurting on Oliva here, landing some big shots from side control. Oliva takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better. Oliva is trying to escape and get back to his feet. Nagendra working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.

Nagendra working the head with strikes. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Nagendra lands a few punches from side control. Nagendra has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Oliva is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Nagendra yanks on the arm and Oliva is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Nagendra.
